4 Prelude and Fugue, Op. 16, No. 3 (for Solo
Organ)—Clara Schumann/ed. Barbara Harbach.
Composed in 1845, Clara Schumann's opus 16
contains three preludes and fugues for piano, in
G minor, B-flat major, and D minor, respectively.
Schumann was a great pianist and interpreter of
Romantic piano literature, including the music of
her husband Robert Schumann and longtime friend
Johannes Brahms. This work, from a set of three
keyboard works, is a well-crafted prelude and fugue
from the Romantic period, obviously inspired by her
love and study of Bach's music.

4 Prelude in F Major for Solo Organ—Fanny
Mendelssohn/ed. Barbara Harbach. Fanny
Mendelssohn Hensel (1805-1847) is quickly
becoming one of the best-known woman
composers of the Romantic era. This is the newly
recovered wedding recessional that she wrote for
her own wedding in 1829. A stately and vigorous
march, it alternates between sections of full chords
and imitative sections, with wide-spaced chords
and a prominent pedal line. The various sections
contrast melodic elements with chords. The
Prelude in F Major shows Fanny's admiration for
Bach's works in its use of "Prelude" in the title and
in its idiomatic writing for the organ. All dynamic,
articulation, and tempo marks are suggestions of
the editor.

l Suite on Luther Chorales for Solo Organ—
Martin Luther/arr. Barbara Harbach. This seven-
part Suite on Luther Chorales for Solo Organ follows
the centuries-old practice of invigorating traditional
melodies with contemporary harmonizations,
rhythms, and orchestral colors. The melody used
in three of the seven movements (Parts I, IV, VII)
is Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (A Mighty Fortress
Is Our God), one of the best-known hymns by
Luther, who wrote the words and music sometime
between 1517-1519. The second Luther hymn
(Part II), Vater unser im Himmelreich (Our Father
in Heaven), is a paraphrase in German of the Nunc
dimittis, the canticle of Simeon written in 1524 and
often used for funerals. The third Luther hymn (Part
V), Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir (From Deepest
Depths I Cry to Thee), was written in 1524, a
paraphrase of Psalm 130. Excellent repertoire for
accomplished organists.
