WARM-UPS & VOICE BUILDING
Aligning Voices (Exercises to Build Choral Musicianship)—Dean Luethi.
This resource is a must-have for all choral directors looking to make the most of
their warm-up time. This book of versatile, pedagogically based choral warm-ups
helps directors take full advantage of this important time in every rehearsal, providing
tools for assessment, musicianship, and ensemble unity at the same time singers
are warming up their voices. The exercises in Aligning Voices are organized into nine
chapters, each focusing on a different area of choral technique: Rhythm, Brilliance,
Intonation, Balance, Dynamics, Consonants, Beginning Consonants, Vowels, and
Diphthongs and Ending Consonants. Each warm-up contains two or more parts,
allowing the director to work toward improving choral sound in a texture similar to that
of the repertoire. Each exercise is presented in three voicings - SATB, SSAA, and TTBB
- and sequentially organizes them by difficulty level. In addition, each section begins by
defining the objective for each exercise and offering practical solutions for many of the
common challenges choirs face in each area. The companion student edition contains
only the music notation for each exercise.

Choral Ensemble Intonation (Method, Procedures and Exercises)—
James Jordan & Matthew Mehaffey. Faced with persistent intonation problems
in their own choirs, authors James Jordan and Matthew Mehaffey developed an
innovative new method of choral ensemble solfege that offers dramatic improvement
in tuning any choral ensemble. Not just a temporary fix, this method encourages the
building of intonation skills within the choral rehearsal setting, using solfege syllables in
creative ways to develop aural capabilities in each individual singer. The related video
shows these techniques in action with surprising results. Topics such as good vocal
production, physical movement and modal analysis are also discussed to aid in the
teaching and learning process. Practical and effective, this is a helpful tool for choir
directors at every level.

The Choral Warm-Up: Accompanied Canons for Choirs—
James Jordan & Roger Ames. This addition to the successful Choral Warm-Up series
provides one of the most important tools in teaching elements of choral intonation:
canons. By singing canons, the ensemble can develop (often for the first time) listening
skills that require "listening to someone other than yourself." These modal canons
extend the listening even further by adding harmonically supportive and enriching
accompaniments. Choir directors seeking to improve the musicianship, vocal skills and
intonation of their singers will find these modal canons to be an outstanding addition to
their library of warm-ups!
