Awake My Soul,
Give Thanks and Sing
Craig Courtney.
Based upon the truths of Psalm 57, Susan Bentall
Boersma's text is powerfully set in an anthem that
is appropriate for any service of worship and praise.
Strong rhythmic statements of the text are punctuated
by equally strong "Alleluia" responses. The boldly
assertive piano accompaniment adds gravitas.

Bless His Holy Name
Mark Shepperd.
A lilting 6/8 setting of Psalm 103, this is scored for
SATB voices, descant, and congregation, with piano
and optional 3-5 octave handbells. First the choir
sings the antiphon and the congregation copies it.
Then the choir sings a verse, and when the antiphon
returns, it is sung in canon. A final verse with antiphon
and descant leads to a brief concluding
coda for choir alone.

Come By Here
arr. Kyle Pederson.
This sweet setting for SATB voices and piano of
KUM
BA YAH is so thoughtfully different from any other
arrangement that it is not to be missed! Musically
sound and creative, with occasional guided piano
improvisation, it includes a quote of the hymn tune
NICAEA (Holy, Holy, Holy). This work hits every high
mark in terms of vocal writing, skillful accompaniment,
and beautiful effect.

Does Not Wisdom Call?
Hank Hinnant.
As a church musician himself, Hank Hinnant's choral
music is always accessible, inspirational, melodically
beautiful, and engaging to those who hear his musical
creation. He writes particularly well for high school
and adult church choirs. This piece, based on
Proverbs 8:1-11, is set for divisi mixed chorus with
piano and optional oboe. It would work quite well on
Christian Education Sunday.

Endless Song
Ralph Manuel.
Composer Ralph Manuel is well known to us for his
beautiful
ALLELUIA. In this new work Manuel sets the
well-known text How Can I Keep From Singing by
Robert Lowry for mixed chorus with piano and optional
obbligato for two violins. The piece would work great
for Music Ministry Sunday.

Exsultate! Jubilate!
Kyle Pederson.
This unique setting pairs the iconic Latin text with
a new, original English text which responds to the
question: Why do we rejoice and shout our praises
to God? The music captures the energy, rhythm, and
exuberance inherent in the phrases "exsultate Deo"
and "jubilate Deo," but also reflects the quiet joys
found in gratitude for the daily gifts of breath and
light. The piano accompaniment is rhythmic and lively.

Gloria
Gary Hallquist.
This declamatory Christmas piece provides a fresh
take on the Nativity story. The cacophony of choral
sound in the middle section is akin perhaps to the
angelic announcement of Jesus' birth, leading to an
emphatic closing proclamation. Joyful!

God is With Us
Brad Nix.
A vigorous piano part sets the stage for this
celebratory anthem that affirms the many ways that
God's promises endure. Opening in a driving minor
key, it is contrasted by a lyrical middle section in
major. The optional brass quartet and timpani writing
is very strong with a good message for our time.

How Sweet the Sound
Kyle Pederson.
This work has the ethos of a spiritual, with the text
and a few riffs inspired by Amazing Grace. The choir,
considering the power of grace in song, affirms that
no trouble, no shame, no valley is too deep for the
healing gift and power of soul-freeing grace. The
music has a driving quality, with the choir occasionally
backing up the soloist with humming, quick
commentary, or a sustained neutral syllable.
