H 5.4 on the Richter Scale—Larry Neeck. 5.4 on
the Richter Scale is an upbeat modern-sounding
swing chart that really cooks! Hip 5/4 blues sections
are contrasted with a straight-ahead swingin' 4/4
blues, which gives this chart its unique appeal.
There are plenty of opportunities for your soloists to
improvise on 4/4 blues changes, or with the written
suggested solos included. It will sound great with
full or reduced instrumentation. Tired of the same
old blues? 5.4 on the Richter Scale is a really fresh
chart for your next concert!

702 Shuffle—Bret Zvacek. Need a great opener
or a burning closer? 702 Shuffle can take care of
either spot on the program! With a strong melody,
an infectious groove and solid ensemble work,
this Bret Zvacek composition will fit well into any
program. The open solo section allows for plenty of
room for your soloist to stretch out with the provided
solo or improvisation. Highly recommended!

H Abracadabra—Larry Barton. The magic of this
slinky swinger will put your audience under a spell!
The lead wind players start things out on the head,
but before long the full band is jamming along. It's
an "in your face" chart that's all about attitude!

H Afternoon—Pat Metheny/arr. Bob Curnow. Here
is a slow, swinging, lovely, warm, relaxed chart in
the style of that famous Neal Hefti swing ballad! The
arrangement is subtle and easy to play, and there
are not a lot of pieces by Pat Metheny that swing
in this way. The arrangement suggests flugelhorns
throughout, although trumpets would work just fine.
There is solo space for alto saxophone and trumpet/
flugel. Very nice!

Afternoon in Paris—John Lewis/arr. Mark
Taylor. John Lewis (composer, pianist, and
founder of the acclaimed Modern Jazz Quartet)
penned Afternoon in Paris in the 1950s and it has
remained a jazz standard ever since. This nicely
crafted version for developing jazz ensembles
opens with a small group on the head and drums
on brushes. Solos for trumpet and tenor follow
with suggested solos and scale/chord sheets
provided, along with dynamic full ensemble
statements. Highly recommended!

hard! This easy medium-tempo blues in B-flat

Artistry in Rhythm—Stan Kenton/arr. Paul
Murtha. Composed and recorded by Stan
Kenton in the 1940s, Artistry in Rhythm became
his signature and a true classic from the big-
band era. Paul Murtha has skillfully adapted
and truncated this for younger players while
maintaining the flavor and energy of the original.
Solo piano starts things off followed by the iconic
trombone solo in the medium Latin section. The
exciting double time swing section features
the entire ensemble, then the maestoso theme
returns to close things out. Impressive!

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes—arr. Ralph Ford.
Crazy title? It's from the movie of the same name
and is a tongue-in-cheek swing chart adapted from
a much more difficult chart by Gordon Goodwin
for his Big Phat Band. Arranged by Ralph Ford for
developing players, it will be a hit with both the
band and the audience. No improvised solos, just
ensemble playing and some great section solis.
This will be a fun chart for any performance! Highly
recommended! Optional expanded instrumentation.

H Autumn Leaves—Joseph Kosma/arr. Peter Blair.
This is a great old tune! Except...there's nothing
"old" sounding about it. It's a medium swing version
of a marvelous, often-played standard that opens
with an alto and trumpet duet and is filled with tight
ensemble punches. The saxes are featured on a
chorus and there is a written or ad lib solo for piano.

Back Online—Gregory Yasinitsky. Don't miss this
swinging, shuffle blues chart for developing groups
that cooks right off the top! Set at about 132 bpm,
it features a full and hot saxophone section soli, a
stop-time section leading into the solo, a written
or improvised solo for trumpet, and a section that
comes way down after the solos that feature the
brass and then the full ensemble. It then opens
up and really begins to swing! Additionally, it can
be played with optional reduced or expanded
instrumentations. Back Online is accessible for
many bands and is highly recommended!

The Bare Necessities (from The Jungle Book)
—arr. John Wasson. From "The Jungle Book," this
timeless classic appeared in the original movie as
well as the repeated blockbuster hit. With a jaunty
2-beat swing style and well-known melody, this
one is impossible not to like. This carefully crafted
arrangement requires no solos, but features every
section of the band with the trombones first,
followed by the saxes and finally trumpets. Smart,
stylish and pure fun!

rubato introduction sets up the infectious shuffle feel
of this swingin' feature for baritone saxophone. The
solo is written or improvised and the arrangement
features nice band licks and backgrounds, a sax soli,

solo section. The key selection of Ab ensures that all
lines lay well for the soloist and the ranges remain
moderate for all players. A guaranteed audience

have" for bands with strong, sassy bari players.
