Lucky Lockie—Lachlan Davidson. A solid bass
line groove is the foundation of this fun Latin/rock
chart for young jazz bands. All sections have the
melody at some time and other features include:
highly melodic lines, a written solo for trombone, a
written or improvised solo for alto sax, and a short
horns-only section. All this, and it's playable with
optional reduced or expanded instrumentations.
Lucky to find this one!

Manteca—Dizzy Gillespie/arr. Michael Sweeney.
One of the classic examples of the Afro-Cuban
style in jazz, Dizzy Gillespie's Manteca endures
as a true standard. Available here in a version for
young bands, Michael Sweeney carefully simplifies
the complexities of the tune while maintaining the
rhythmic drive and energetic style of the original.
Arranged for full jazz ensemble, it's also playable
with as few as 4 saxes, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones
and 3 rhythm. Very nice, indeed!

O Christmas Tree—arr. Haley Woodrow. This
reimagining of a classic holiday staple will be a
surefire favorite at your holiday concert! Influenced
by the sounds of Latin America, this arrangement
includes a fun montuno and a swing shout
section. While scored for traditional big band
instrumentation, it's also playable with just rhythm
section and a single trumpet, trombone, alto and
tenor saxophone, or anything in between. Limited
ranges make this accessible to a wide range of
bands. Be sure to check out this great chart!

instrumentations. Highly recommended!

Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars (Corcovado)—
Antonio Carlos Jobim/arr. John Berry. Jobim's
timeless bossa nova is set here in a very fine
arrangement for young jazz players. The smooth
melodies and Latin flavor help make this appealing
to players and audiences alike. The melody is
skillfully traded from section to section and no solos
are required. Playable with optional reduced or
expanded instrumentations, this is highly effective,
accessible, and not to be missed!

Some Sauce-a, for Your Bossa?—Brad
Ciechomski. This bossa nova layers pleasing
melodies and clever harmonies on top of the classic
beat from Brazil. After the melody statement,
there's a nice development section leading to
the open solo section where players can use the
suggested solo sheets in all keys or improvise over
the chord symbols. More features include moderate
ranges, notated rhythm section parts, and options
for reduced or expanded instrumentation. Sauce
with a bit of spice, but not too hot!

band, it's equally effective when played with as few
as 3 saxes, 2 trumpets, 1 trombone and rhythm.

H Tiger of San Pedro—John LaBarbera/arr. Paul
Lavender. At last! An exciting, easy setting of
this great John LaBarbera Latin chart that's ideal

limited groups.

U D'Bossa—Rod Blumenau. Tired of sleepy bossa
nova charts? Well, sit up and take notice because
this one is different! This unique and beautifully
crafted bossa nova features very colorful harmonies
and enough syncopation to be interesting but still
playable by all. After an attention-grabbing piano
introduction, there's a horns-only section along
with piano before the rhythm section is added, and
then the whole band. The open solo section is for
anyone with the included scales sheets or written
solos in all the parts. The ranges are moderate,
the rhythm section parts are notated, and the
instrumentation is flexible. This is one of the best and
highly recommended!
