H April in Paris—Vernon Duke/trans. Jeff Hest. This
chart is simply about style! And with style is exactly
how Count Basie and his orchestra played it! From
the silky smooth sax soli on the head to the Pop Goes
The Weasel trumpet solo to the "...one more time..."
repeat of the last phrase, every detail of this jazz
standard has been transcribed and reconstructed by
Jeff Hest. A remarkable, authentic way to tell your
audience what swing is really all about!

H
Better Get Hit in Your Soul (Better Get It in Your
Soul)—Charles Mingus/arr. Andrew Homzy.
Written in a fast 3/4, this gospel-inspired burner
is as fun to play as it is to listen to. There's great
interplay between sections of the band as layers
of sound move in and out. Also included are
hand claps and some "play any note you want"
opportunities to really liven things up. The flexible
solo section allows you to customize this to fit
the strengths of your band. Also included are
optional parts for flute, clarinet and French horn.
Highly recommended!

a churning swing style and a catchy riff-based
melody, this well-crafted chart spins its way
through every section of the ensemble. In the solo
section, written samples are provided for tenor,
trumpet, and trombone, however with the easy
changes and open format, anyone in the band can
take a solo. This chart is highly caffeinated and a lot
of fun!

Big Dipper—Thad Jones/arr. Mike Carubia. Here
is one of Thad Jones' most popular compositions
rescored in the key of F concert to make it more
accessible to developing jazz ensembles. An
audience-friendly blues chart that is very playable
and features plenty of mid-range full ensemble
sections, it also includes written or improvised solos
for piano, tenor sax and trumpet. A true Thad Jones
classic! An optional flute part is included and the

to F; Alto Sax to C.

Billie's Bounce—Charlie Parker/arr. Mike Tomaro.
Here's a fresh take on the bebop blues classic by
Charlie Parker. In the little big band format, it starts
out in a funk style then alternates with swing. The
soloists have an opportunity to improvise in both
styles. The small band instrumentation is: six horns
(ATB saxes, two trumpets and one trombone) plus
four rhythm with optional additional parts included
for alto, tenor and trombone.

Birk's Works—Dizzy Gillespie/arr. Mike Tomaro.
In this classic minor blues tune from Dizzy Gillespie,
Mike Tomaro starts this version as a funky mambo,
but then shifts the style to swing and back again
to the mambo feel. This well-paced arrangement
features a great feel plus solos for trumpet and
tenor. There is tons of variety in this excellent chart
that will show off your band's ability to play and
change from style to style!

Blackwing Blues—Doug Beach. With a sit-up-
and-take-notice introduction, Blackwing Blues is a
straight-ahead shuffle chart played at about 138
bpm that provides an abundance of teaching and
performance opportunities. With the melody in the
sax section and strong support from the brass, it
falls into a comfortable groove that progresses to
a stop-time interlude before the solos. The strong
melody, solid ensemble writing, blues-based
changes, and an open written or improvised solo
section all combine to create a really nice chart.
Highly recommended!

Blue Monk—Thelonious Monk/arr. Mark Taylor.
One of the signature tunes from jazz legend
Thelonious Monk is this quirky and iconic blues!
This great-sounding version for big bands maintains
the medium swing feel and "Monk-isms" from
the original, but the arranger's own stamp of
originality is exemplified with crafty ensemble lines,
rhythmic twists, and some powerful full ensemble
statements in mixed meters. Solos are included for
tenor, trumpet and drums, along with marvelous
writing for the entire band. Suggested solos are
included along with chord/scale sheets in all keys.
Highly effective!

Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy—Raye & Prince/arr.
Stephen Bulla. Originally a hit back in 1941 for the
Andrews Sisters, this classic has stood the test of
time and is hard to beat for its entertainment value.
This updated version has all the excitement of
the original and the ranges are moderate for the
trumpets. There are solos for trumpet and baritone
sax in this outstanding chart that will appeal to
your audiences and ensemble. Get out the saddle
oxfords, bobby socks and pleated skirts for this one!

Boplicity—Davis & Evans/arr. Mike Tomaro.
The landmark album by Miles Davis, Birth Of The
Cool, introduced the unique sound of the nonet
instrumentation. Without straying from the intent
of the music, and working directly with the original
score, Mike Tomaro has adapted this tune from
the album for standard instrumentation, making it
accessible to today's jazz ensembles. The style is
laid-back swing, and it includes solos for baritone
sax, trumpet and piano, as in the original version. A
jazz standard for your library!
2701398 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .55.00
Bye Bye Blackbird—Ray Henderson/arr. Rich
Sigler. This swinging chart is a great vehicle for
a tenor sax soloist with jazz band. The solo part
ranges from written melody to a written jazz solo,
all very accessible, and it especially swings when
the tenor soloist trades fours with the ensemble.
The ensemble and soloist are equally featured
throughout. The lead trumpet range is to written
G top of staff and optional parts are included for
expanded instrumentation. A great jazz standard for
developing jazz groups!
10997194 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .48.00
Canal Street Commotion—Mike Carubia.
This chart features the sound of a New Orleans
funeral band historically known as the "Second
Line" behind the family and casket. It's a time
for celebration coming after the initial mourning
period. It's lots of fun to play in the style of a funky,
marching, dixieland band. The harmonic form
is the blues and there is room made for soloing
both inside the ensemble and for featured soloists.
The saxophone section features soprano lead
and optional flute and tuba parts are included. A
change-of-pace highlight with attitude!
10518317 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .48.00
Catwalk—Andrew Neu. Inspired by the music of
Henry Mancini and the spy movies of the 1960s,
Catwalk is a cool jazz, minor swing tune featuring
alto saxophone, trumpet and guitar on the melody
at first, then written or improvised solos for alto sax
and trumpet. Dynamic contrasts provide a potent
vehicle for the individual sections and the full
ensemble. Not your typical swing chart, this is a
super choice as a change-of-pace chart!
10879769 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .52.00
H Count Bubba—Gordon Goodwin/arr. Paul Murtha.
Paul Murtha has adapted this monster chart from
Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band to an easier
level while maintaining all the intensity and drive
of the original. The trombones take the lead at
the top followed by the trumpets then saxes, until
finally the entire ensemble cuts loose. It includes
suggested or improvised solos for trumpet and
alto saxophone. Exceptional sounds for developing
players! Highly recommended!
10052541 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .45.00
H Dat Dere—Bobby Timmons/arr. Erik Morales.
A soulful tune with a catchy title and melody! Erik
Morales captures composer Bobby Timmons'
medium swing groove. At a moderate tempo,
with a slightly mysterious intro, the saxes grab the
melody and it builds from there. A written (or ad
lib) alto solo is provided with a fat shout chorus.
This is an outstanding chart in every respect!
Highly recommended!
10277767 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .52.00
The Defibrillator—Adrien Re. Nothing makes you
get into a groove like a shuffle and this one has
a fierce back-beat that will hook you right at the
top! A very hip melody line, written-out solos for
tenor sax and 1st trombone, lead trumpet range to
written A above the staff and a power-house shout
chorus are but a few of the features. A hot bari sax
part, too! This is nothing but fun to play! Optional
expanded instrumentation.

Ellington/arr. Mark Taylor. True to the original
medium-tempo swing style, this creative chart in
the Little Big Band format features satisfying full-
ensemble scoring with suggested or improvised
solos for tenor sax and trumpet. Scored for three
saxes, two trumpets, one trombone and four
rhythm, with optional parts for alto sax, tenor
sax and trombone, this is great for additional
performance and rehearsal opportunities for key
players. Highly recommended!

4 Down a Notch—Paul Baker. A medium-slow
12-bar blues in the Basie tradition, with accessible
figures that swing hard. At this tempo the band can
focus on the swing style and really make the shout
chorus shout! The chart opens with two choruses
of piano solo before the saxes come in to state the
melody. After a strong send-off, the floor is open for
soloists. This chart ends with a big shout chorus!
Trumpet range is to written high C; trombone range
is to G. You don't want to miss this one!

Ernie's Romp—BIll Sears/arr. Mark Taylor. Here's
a great-sounding chart for featuring a tenor sax and
guitar duet, or just tenor sax. Utilizing a medium
shuffle groove, this smooth chart features a dialog
between a small group and the full ensemble. The
solo section (trumpet, then tenor sax) alternates
between a half-time groove and straight-ahead
swing. Then it's topped off with a powerful shout
chorus for the full band!
11105122 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . .55.00
Fables of Faubus—Charles Mingus/arr. Sy
Johnson. Here's the classic Mingus chart in a
version from the Simply Mingus series that exudes
a sense of anger and sarcasm and definitely
projects an edginess. The baritone sax and
bass trombone will have fun with the opening,
and there's plenty for the rest of the band to
get excited about in this medium swing romp.
Includes suggested solos and optional parts for
flute, clarinet and French horn.
