It's always good programming to include a ballad and here's a warm and tender ballad feature for your tenor sax player. This timeless jazz tune, recorded by countless jazz artists, is scored for developing groups by arranger Mike Smukal. He adds the lush harmony you would expect and then moves into a double time section, returning to the ballad tempo for the ending. Everything is notated for the soloist and rhythm section. Pat Metheny is known for his beautiful melodies, and Back in Time is no exception. Featuring a flugelhorn or trumpet soloist throughout on a written-out solo with chords included for improvisation, this arrangement is very playable by the ensemble with its moderate ranges. Originally recorded on the reissued Secret Story CD, this arrangement is a great addition to Bob Curnow's continuing reflection on Metheny's music. Here's an easy-going swing ballad chart that gives trumpet soloists a chance to stand in the spotlight! Only rarely does a jazz tune cross over to the pop charts the way this Chuck Mangione classic did back in the seventies! Flugelhorn solo on the 1st trumpet part is featured throughout with the distinctive melody and then with a written or ad lib solo along with a tenor solo. The flugelhorn solo range is up to an optional written high C, but the solo is cued on the 1st tenor part as well. Victor's arrangement brings this contemporary gem within the range of the developing trumpet player without losing any of the hip appeal of the original. Here's a perennially appealing, samba/rock chart that will provide outstanding performance opportunities for your band and soloist! Based on the version recorded by Clifford Brown accompanied by strings, this marvelous ballad from 1930 provides trumpet or flugel soloists the perfect opportunity to showcase their lyrical chops. The written solo part features a modest range and sample phrases adapted directly from Clifford Brown's recording.
