l Waltz from "Masquerade Suite"—Aram
Khachaturian/arr. Lynne Latham. This whim-
sical theme is perfect for teaching intervals
and chromatic fingerings. Violas use half
position, and first violins will shift to third
position. Cellos and violas are featured in the
second theme, and this abridged arrangement
omits the middle section. A great Halloween

community orchestra.

e Academic Festival Overture—J. Brahms/arr.
Robert D. McCashin. This arrangement offers
exciting opportunities for more mature players.
A combination of juxtaposed and interlocking
double-stops are used to maintain the sonorous
depth of Brahms' original work. Several
edits have been made to bring this to a more
appropriate length for concert and festival
performances. Although this is ideal for large
string orchestras, also consider using it for a
chamber group of your finest musicians!

4 Allegro in D Major—Michael Haydn/arr. Robert
D. McCashin. Though overshadowed by his
famous brother, Michael Haydn is a composer
worth introducing to your orchestra. This piece is
an arrangement of the first movement of his Flute
Quartet in D Major.

e Allegro Moderato (from "Symphony No. 3")
—Camille Saint-Saens/arr. Deborah Baker
Monday. This movement of the famous "Organ
Symphony" includes two of the most memorable
themes ever penned by Saint-Saens. This
arrangement includes the highly energetic string
theme and the beautiful fugue based on his four-
note theme which cycles throughout the entire
symphony. The two contrasting sections of this
arrangement offer two extremes of bowing style:
one requiring heavy strokes at the frog and the
other using legato, expressive, full bowing.

le Anvil Chorus (from "Il Trovatore")—Giuseppe
Verdi/arr. Deborah Baker Monday. This iconic
piece by Giuseppe Verdi is presented here in
B minor and G major. This allows the violins to
really shine while all parts have melodic interest.
True to the original, the optional percussion parts
add a true symphonic flair and the anvil parts are
easy enough to be played by a parent or guest.

H Capriol Suite—Peter Warlock. This staple of the
string orchestra repertoire, composed in 1927,
is based on a suite of six Renaissance dances.

and together they form an excellent concert
work. Original edition.

Williams/arr. Ralph Greaves. Here is the original
and beloved fantasia that calls for string
orchestra, harp, and two soloists-usually flutes
but often substituted with violins. This lush
arrangement of the English folksong is a classic
in the string repertoire and a wonderful example
of the Vaughan Williams sound. A must-have for
every orchestra library!

4e Fidelio Overture—Ludwig van Beethoven/arr.
Todd Parrish. The Fidelio Overture was written
in 1814 to open Beethoven's only opera by the
same name. This string orchestra arrangement
is transposed from the original E major to the
more approachable key of D major. It retains
the original opening which alternates between
powerful majestic bursts and lyrical harmonic
progressions, finishing with the energetic
presto to the end. Optional timpani gives this
arrangement a symphonic quality that closely
resembles the original.
