SACRED & SECULAR
Rise Up, My Love—Tom Merrill. This work was
inspired by the nuptial Mass of a former student,
who had arranged for her chorus to sing for the
ceremony. One of the texts read at the wedding
was the passage from the Song of Solomon
used in this work. The approach is joyful rather
than romantic, the vocal parts approachable
but interesting thanks to rhythmic interplay and
a variety of textures. The piano part adds to the
dance-like mood.

Sing Out, My Soul!—Marques L. A. Garrett.
William Henry Davies' text is given a driving,
rhythmic setting for mixed or treble choirs that
encourages singer and listener alike to "sing
out!" their songs of joy. The contrasting middle
section is undergirded with rhythmic energy from
the piano accompaniment, while allowing for the
choral lines to explore more contemplative lyrical
phrasing before a return to the joyful texture of the
beginning. A wonderful opening selection!

D Two Songs By Amy Beach—Amy Beach/arr.
Brandon Williams. Often considered to be one of
the first great American female composers, Amy
Beach's art songs are stylistically similar to those
of other late-Romantic European composers.
Here we have two solo art songs on texts by
Robert Browning that possess soaring melodies
and colorful piano accompaniments from which
the choral harmonies are drawn. Songs include:
The Year's at the Spring and Ah, Love, But a Day.

stage. Lovely!

What Is Water?—Judy Herrington. Written by
the poet at the age of five, the profundity behind
her thoughts is the first impressive moment of this
work. The first melodic line holds the weight of
the question while the second melody dances as
your thoughts become dazzled. Returning to the
first theme, you enjoy the unanswered questions
of the ages from the innocence of youth.

carries. The upbeat musical setting incorporates
various styles and gives the option to use an entire

fall, you do not walk alone." This ethereal setting
of a traditional Irish blessing is scored for mixed or

the vocal texture. Gradually building in intensity,
it transitions into the final stanza with a burst of
light, aided by the key change, then slowly draws
to a quiet close.
