A Hoopla (from The Settling Years)—Libby
Larsen. From a three-part collection based on
poetry by American pioneers, this third piece
depicts a barn dance as vocalists circle 'round
the instruments, stomp, clap, and perform with
general abandon and boisterous vigor.

te As the rain hides the stars—Ian Assersohn.
This setting of a traditional Gaelic prayer is
poignant and heartfelt, with sustained lines and
a full, rich choral sound. Gentle shifts in harmony
between various combinations of voices and the
use of unexpected chromatic chords imitate the
slow movement of the clouds, rain, and mist, and
reveal something once hidden.

t As They Draw to a Close—Shawn Crouch.
Walt Whitman wrote this poem near the end of his
life as he was reflecting on his past and preparing
for physical death. The music reflects this idea,
as it is both meditative, with passages of quiet
homophonic passages, as well as celebratory.
All the while there is a soaring melody weaving
through the textures.

and ultimately claim our place among the stars.

t Autumn (from Madrigals for the Seasons)—
David Conte. This piece from the set Madrigals for
the Seasons conjures up vivid images of autumn:
the fading of summer flowers, the colors of the
leaves, the browning of the fields. The musical
setting is an expressive larghetto in the minor mode.
The piece ends with a surprising harmonic twist
which expresses both the opening of oneself to the
acceptance of death and to the peace that it offers.
