LARGE PERCUSSION ENSEMBLES easy / medium-easy
Lattes on the House—Chris Roode. Lattes on the
House is an introductory piece written to teach the
application of beginning rhythms to a percussion
ensemble. Written for three sizes of conga drums
along with claves and tambourine, the piece can be
easily expanded by doubling or tripling each part. The
ensemble develops grooves together and struts its
stuff building to a lengthy solo section. You bring the
espresso, have the students bring the steamed milk,
and in no time you'll be enjoying Lattes on the House.

Low Tide—Ralph Hicks. A sweet and tender work,
Low Tide evokes the sounds of the sea through
sensitive swells, special wave-like effects, unique
colors, and attention to mallet choices. The piece
focuses on controlling a slow tempo with constant
dynamic contrasts. It serves as a great way to train
younger players not just how to play percussion
instruments with proper technique, but how to play
with musical sensitivity.

what it might feel like to fly. The music evokes
images of gliding, breathtaking views, and soaring
high above the clouds. It is meant to evoke a sense
of freedom, hopefulness, and wonder in the listener.
While the piece is written for younger groups with
limited experience, it still communicates through
a contemporary musical voice. Furthermore, to

Puzzle Pieces—Josh Gottry. Puzzle Pieces is a
minimalist work that allows the performers to be
part of the composition process. Rather than a
traditional score and parts, each player is given
three sets of measures and a final measure. Once
the conductor sets the tempo, each player decides
which measure to play out of each set and for how
long. As they progress, the measures become
more intense rhythmically until the conductor cues
the final measure and all players end the piece in
unison. Clever, fun and creatively inspiring!

H Rhythmsicles—Various Composers. This
collection of eight concert ensembles is written for
six players and structured so each player is given
the opportunity to play battery percussion (snare,
bass drum, cymbals), timpani, mallet percussion
and auxiliary hand percussion instruments. Set-up
guides and helpful instrument substitutions make
this package the quintessential educational tool
for teaching and motivating the young percussion
ensemble. The package includes a conductor's
score and six individual part books, MP3 audio files
are available through the publisher's website.

Sic Semper Draconis—John Herndon. Meaning
"Thus always to dragons" in Latin, Sic Semper
Draconis was inspired by fairy tales and fantasy
novels. It moves through many different moods and
textures to depict an epic tale of dragon slaying.
Though the piece features dense instrumentation,
most instruments can be found in any band
room and will be already familiar to most young
percussionists. A complement to almost any
concert program - this will certainly entertain
audiences and excite young performers!

H Toboggan—John Herndon. Toboggan is a magical
work for young percussionists depicting a short, fast
ride on a small sled. The piece starts by capturing
the excitement of finding new-fallen snow. The
descent swishes and jingles at high speed through
sudden direction changes, patches of rough snow,
and the gentle rising and falling of fresh powder
ending with a playful crash into a snowdrift. The
piece makes for a great introduction to mallet
percussion using mainly stepwise motion for the
melody and supporting roles. The accompanying
orchestral battery parts should fall well within the
range of most beginners. A sincere delight!

Beware the Jabberwock—John Willmarth.
Lewis Carroll's famous nonsense poem,
Jabberwocky is considered a classic in English
literature. This musical setting of the same poem
titled Beware the Jabberwock is an exciting and
accessible treatment of the original. The poem tells
the tale of an epic battle between a boy and the
vicious creature known as the Jabberwock, with the
boy being triumphant in the end. To tell this tale
and to match Carroll's innovative use of nonsense
words like "chortled" and "galumphing," the piece
is arranged with an assortment of quirky percussion
accessories as well as dissonant harmonies. These
compositional techniques help provide the perfect
sonic underpinning for Carroll's poem. An optional
narration is included.
