The Bells of Moscow—Sergei Rachmaninoff/
arr. Stephen Primatic. Rachmaninoff's Prelude
in C-sharp minor left a lasting impression on
audiences when it was first premiered. It became
so popular that it garnered many pseudonyms
throughout the world such as The Burning of
Moscow, The Day of Judgment, and The Moscow
Waltz, though it's often known as The Bells of
Moscow due to the way its introduction mimics the
Kremlin's stately carillon chimes. Originally written
for piano and characterized by dense harmonies
and bombastic accents, this piece is perfectly
suited for a richly colored orchestration for the world
of percussion.

l Dance Suite—Chris Carmean. Dance Suite is a
set of six short pieces inspired by ballroom dance
styles. The movements present a variety of musical
styles and opportunity for exposure to the music,
movement, and culture behind each dance style.
Students will be excited to perform any movement
of the Dance Suite, and audience members will
have trouble sitting still!

Danse Macabre—Camille Saint-Saens/arr. Brian
Slawson. The xylophone part from Camille Saint-
Saens' orchestral work Danse Macabre is one
of the most famous excerpts for the instrument.
The violin and clarinet parts, among others, also
feature memorable themes, many of which have
been arranged here for percussion ensemble.
The xylophone takes the prominent melodic voice
while the rest of the ensemble adds color around
it, creating a mysterious mood befitting a dance of
skeletons on Halloween night.

Die Fleder-Rag—Johann Strauss II/arr. Stephen
Primatic. The overture to Johann Strauss II's
comic operetta "Die Fledermaus" is a favorite of
audiences everywhere and a staple in the modern
orchestral repertoire. Here it is set as a jaunty and
rousing rag for percussion ensemble. Despite
Strauss being dubbed the "Waltz King," there are
no waltzes in this rendition. Written for six mallet
keyboard instruments and three percussion parts,
this entertaining piece for intermediate percussion
ensemble sounds as if it could have been originally
conceived this way.

Dueling Comedians—Dmitri Kabalevsky/arr.
Stephen Primatic. The Kabalevsky classic featuring
two xylophone players on the same instrument.
The scoring is done purposely so the players are
constantly in each other's way. The program notes
instruct the musicians to nudge and "hip check"
each other in an attempt to gain control of the
instrument. Highly entertaining! Your audience will
love it!

Equinox—Rick Dior. An intermediate-level
ensemble with a featured theremin soloist. The
title Equinox is taken from the biannual crossing
of the sun over the equator which results in night
and day being of equal length on two days of the
year. Shifting, crossing melodic motifs serve as
countermelodies to the lead theremin melody; at
times there are as many as four countermelodies
crossing each other. The crossing of these
percussion voices rhythmically and harmonically
mimic the equinox event while the theremin floats
on top of these crossing motifs.

Five on Five—Stephen Primatic. Stephen
Primatic's Five on Five is an aggressive mallet
ensemble piece for 5 players on one 5-octave
marimba. Because of the number of players, each
performer must be aware of their space and move
quickly so as not to disrupt the other performers.
This makes for an artful, amusing, and unique
spectacle. The opening section is propelled forward
by constant 16th notes that are passed around the
ensemble. The middle section is comprised of
slower, more reflective musical material with an
ostinato split between the bottom two players and
lyrical, melodic material in the other players. The
third and final section is a return to the unrelenting
16th note material of the opening.

l Haut Metall Holz—Michael Huestis. Haut Metall
Holz (haút me'tal holts) is an intermediate-
level quintet for percussion. The title comes from
the German words describing the three types of
instruments used by each of the five performers:
skin, metal, and wood. It is a high-energy piece
that includes extreme dynamic contrasts, intricate
grooves, and featured moments for each of the
performers. Musical motifs passed between
performers and interlocking rhythms throughout
the composition make this quintet a fun challenge
for performers.

HeliX—Eric Rath. HeliX was written with the intent
of focusing on the first few learned techniques of
four-mallet keyboard playing. To that end, a fair
amount of four-mallet playing occurs throughout the
piece, but always in service to the music rather than
sounding like a glorified etude. It is exciting, groove-
oriented, and geared toward advanced middle
school or intermediate high school ensembles.

Hidden Dreams—Matthew Curley. Hidden
Dreams is a marvelously arranged piece for high
school percussion ensemble. It starts with the
mallet instruments creating a reverberation effect
by passing around snippets of 16th notes. The
body of the piece is a funky groove interspersed
with cadence-style breaks in the battery. The intro
motif sneaks in here and there and fully reappears
at the end. Very cool!

In the Sky—Patrick Speranza. The title of
this piece is taken from the famous lyric, "like a
diamond in the sky" from the children's song
Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. The use of metallic
instruments throughout conjures the image of
bright, shining stars. The parts are written at
varying skill levels to involve players of differing
experience and requires simple setups. If desired,
the vibraphone and marimba parts can be doubled
to accommodate larger ensembles.

TRiBE—Chad Heiny. Each movement depicts a
different mood, musical style, or aspect of a tribal
ceremony, all cohering into one continuous ritual.
The first movement, Premonition, scored entirely for
non-pitched percussion instruments, is an exciting,
upbeat, and aggressive opening statement. The
second movement, Meditation, offsets the first
as a slow, dark, and introspective work. The third
movement, Rite of Passage, suggests a long and
steady procession. In the final movement, Sacrifice,
the music is highly focused and martial, creating an
exciting finish to a varied experience.

are fully playable with two mallets, though players
may choose to use four.
