Some Sauce-a, for Your Bossa?—Brad
Ciechomski. This bossa nova layers pleasing
melodies and clever harmonies on top of the classic
beat from Brazil. After the melody statement,
there's a nice development section leading to
the open solo section where players can use the
suggested solo sheets in all keys or improvise over
the chord symbols. More features include moderate
ranges, notated rhythm section parts, and options
for reduced or expanded instrumentation. Sauce
with a bit of spice, but not too hot!

Sway—Juan Pablo Ruiz/arr. Rick Stitzel. This
smooth Latin favorite has been around for more
than 50 years and recorded countless times,
including recently by Michael Buble. The easy
rhythms and infectious groove make it an excellent
choice for beginning groups. Scored for full jazz
band, it's equally effective when played with as few
as 3 saxes, 2 trumpets, 1 trombone and rhythm.
Also included are optional parts for flute, 2 clarinets,
horn in F and tuba. This will be a fun favorite!

The Beach Life—Kris Berg. This calypso chart
might be the happiest piece ever written for young
jazz ensemble. Like the classic Sonny Rollins
piece St. Thomas, this composition uses simple
basic chords and rhythms, but the end result is a
sparkling, bright change-of-pace chart. There are
some opportunities for soloing for alto and trumpet,
and your rhythm section players will appreciate
the carefully crafted parts that are easy to play but
sound great.

H Tiger of San Pedro—John LaBarbera/arr. Paul
Lavender. At last! An exciting, easy setting of this
great John LaBarbera Latin chart that's ideal for
developing bands. It is surprisingly true to the
original, but it is well within the reach of even more
limited groups.

U D'Bossa—Rod Blumenau. Tired of sleepy bossa
nova charts? Well, sit up and take notice because
this one is different! This unique and beautifully
crafted bossa nova features very colorful harmonies
and enough syncopation to be interesting but still
playable by all. After an attention-grabbing piano
introduction, there's a horns-only section along with
piano before the rhythm section is added, and then
the whole band. The open solo section is for anyone
with the included scales sheets or written solos in all
the parts. The ranges are moderate, the rhythm section
parts are notated, and the instrumentation is flexible.
This is one of the best and highly recommended!

A Child Is Born—Thad Jones/arr. John Denton.
This wonderful jazz standard by Thad Jones moves
smoothly through a few styles - first as a ballad, then
as a moderate jazz waltz, then as a bossa in four,
and back to the jazz waltz feel - all the while keeping
the beauty and integrity of the original. Written or
ad lib solos are for alto sax and trumpet. Gorgeous
chord voicings and tasty contrapuntal lines support
this beautiful tune in a very tasteful way!

Children of Sanchez—Chuck Mangione/arr.
Victor Lopez. Here's some great news for bands at
the medium-easy level! If the popular Dave Wolpe
arrangement of this tune was just a bit out of reach
for your band, now you can enjoy a successful
performance of this Chuck Mangione classic using
this slightly simplified version! Victor has taken the
key down a whole-step, and has carefully adapted
the ranges, with the highest trumpet note being an
A above the staff. What a treat for developing bands!

Don't Look Back—Debbie Stempien & Greg
Turner. This medium-tempo pop bossa chart
is reminiscent of the music of the Pat Metheny
Group. Despite the complex harmonies and
challenging syncopated rhythms, this piece has
a light, airy, and chill feel to it. The dynamic hook
of the bridge is catchy and invigorating, and
both players and listeners will find themselves
humming the tune. Three solo sections include
both optional written solos and chord symbols for
players preferring to improvise.

Journey to Recife—Richard Evans & Norman
Gimbel/arr. Terry White. Composed in the early
1960s, this marvelous bossa nova may not be as
well known as some, but it is no less attractive -
especially arranged here for young bands. A brief
duet of trumpet and tenor gives way to the saxes,
then ultimately nice rich scoring for the entire band.
Also includes solos for tenor sax and trumpet. This
chart has nice flow and pacing throughout!

and drive your audience into a frenzy! This will go
over big for contest and festival performances,
too! Very highly recommended!
