l Lament—Chris Sharp. This work marks the 20th
anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Poignant
in tone, it begins with groups of woodwinds and
then brass. The second section is also dark, but
the combination with movement in the percussion
section is very effective. The climactic moment is a
full-band setting of the hymn tune A Mighty Fortress
before a haunting ending.

Lightning Field—John Mackey. Inspired by a
massive work of art in which steel rods are placed
over a large expanse of desert, drawing lightning
strikes and creating powerful man-made electrical
storms. This work draws on the ancient impulse
to summon nature's power and a strong feeling
of barely contained energy ripples throughout,
enhanced by using thunder sticks to create the sound
of man-made thunder surrounding the audience.

the path of a traveling pioneer woman and her
family. Featuring an expressive middle section
inside two faster Spanish-influenced sections, this
concert opener or contest and festival selection
also features a short trumpet solo. Use this to
teach about ABA compositional form or as an

A Maid in Bedlam—arr. Randall D. Standridge.
A stunningly beautiful Scottish folk song that
tells a tale of longing, loss, and redemption. This
arrangement begins in the style of an intriguing folk
dance that evolves into a mournful, lyrical moment.
It then takes on a more familiar character as it pays
homage to classic British folk song settings from
generations of composers.

Make Our Garden Grow—Leonard Bernstein/
arr. Joseph Kreines. From Leonard Bernstein's
1956 operetta Candide, the remarkably beautiful
closing number has gone on to become a beloved
and familiar classic, taking on a life all its own.

allows all the natural beauty of the melody to
shine through as the music moves from delicate
scoring in the opening to a powerful climax by the
full ensemble.

Mars—Holst/arr. Bocook. Jay Bocook lends his
arranging talents to Holst's most famous piece of
music, and you can bet the result is exceptional!
This version is musically exciting, well-paced
and very approachable for developing bands. Jay
Bocook condenses the piece to an appropriate
length for bands at this level, but he still manages
to all of the various transitions and motives from
the original. Your band will feel invincible when they
play this one!

Metamorphosis—Andrew Boysen, Jr.. The title
refers to the transformation of a caterpillar into a
butterfly. The piece opens with a beautiful statement
which then morphs into something new in the
faster middle section. The triumphant final section
emerges with lively percussion and ensemble
swells, simulating the butterfly getting ready to take
flight. This imaginative work ends peacefully as the
butterfly floats off into the distance.
