vibrant and soaring original work opens with a
bright fanfare intro that quickly transitions into
a heroic theme over driving percussion. A gentle
and reflective middle section features the lyrical
capabilities of the woodwind section before passing
on to the brass. The piece culminates in a dramatic
recapitulation of the main theme with slight
rhythmical variations. This piece actively engages
all sections of the band and utilizes the strengths

Shapiro's Paper Cut is reminiscent of a movie
soundtrack to which musicians can imagine their
own dramatic scene. Paper Cut is written to make
the players themselves part of the action with
choreographed maneuvers that look as compelling
as they sound. In fact, the band members don't
even play their instruments until halfway into
the work... instead they "play" paper along with
a prerecorded track (available as an mp3)! The
unusual element of paper and the myriad sounds
that can emerge from something so simple offers a
fresh view of what music-making can be and opens
everyone's ears to the sonic possibilities found
among everyday objects. The paper techniques
and the skill of playing against a prerecorded track
are interesting for all ages.

mood becomes more jovial and lively, pressing on
to the bright and spirited ending.

first performance of this piece, the conductor performed
with over 850 musicians! Talk about a "Band-o-rama"!
For years, directors have asked for pieces that can be
performed with mass bands, whether as a culminating
number in a multi-school concert, or as a recruitment tool
to keep younger bandsmen motivated. In some instances,
one school will have multiple bands, each at a different
ability level. This piece will meet the need if any of this
sounds familiar to you. The amazing aspect of this piece,
is that the "sets" that encompass three levels of difficulty,
elementary, middle or junior high, and high school, work as
