Oracle—Vince Gassi. Shrouded in suspenseful
and mystical sounds, the opening of this piece
creates an air of mystery and intrigue in anticipation
of what's to follow. Just as visions grow and take
shape, the music intensifies, leading to bold
musical proclamations that will make a lasting
impression - much like the prophecies of the
oracles of ancient times.

Our Kingsland Spring—Samuel Hazo. With
flowing melodic lines and creative scoring, this
original work is a welcome addition to the band
repertoire. Sections of light and delicate writing
are skillfully alternated with broad-sounding
chorale passages that sound more impressive
and complex than their moderately easy level of
difficulty would indicate.

Our Kingsland Spring—Samuel R. Hazo. Samuel
Hazo's very successful work for younger players
features a balance between light and delicate
writing contrasted with broad chorale-like passages
for the entire ensemble. This adaptation by the
composer now allows smaller bands to experience
the beauty of Our Kingsland Spring.

l Overture for the Heroes—Gary D. Ziek. This
vibrant and soaring original work opens with a
bright fanfare intro that quickly transitions into
a heroic theme over driving percussion. A gentle
and reflective middle section features the lyrical
capabilities of the woodwind section before passing
on to the brass. The piece culminates in a dramatic
recapitulation of the main theme with slight
rhythmical variations. This piece actively engages
all sections of the band and utilizes the strengths
of each instrument family. An excellent choice for a
concert, contest, or as a program opener!

Pacifica—Randall D. Standridge. The West Coast
is famous for being at the forefront of technology
and innovation; it is also an area of great natural
beauty. This duality inspired the staccato musical
elements that create a digital effect against the
contrasting lyrical melodies that represent vistas
of breathtaking landscapes. A wonderfully colorful
musical mosaic of this vibrant part of our country.

Paddy Lay Back—arr. Steven L. Rosenhaus.
Sea shanties are sung by sailors to keep them
synchronized (and mentally interested) while doing
the hard labor of sailing. You will hear an almost
antiphonal juxtaposition of brass versus woodwinds.
Students will enjoy the jaunty energy of this while
playing a nicely scored song of the sea!

Paper Cut—Alex Shapiro. Composer Alex
Shapiro's Paper Cut is reminiscent of a movie
soundtrack to which musicians can imagine their
own dramatic scene. Paper Cut is written to make
the players themselves part of the action with
choreographed maneuvers that look as compelling
as they sound. In fact, the band members don't
even play their instruments until halfway into
the work... instead they "play" paper along with
a prerecorded track (available as an mp3)! The
unusual element of paper and the myriad sounds
that can emerge from something so simple offers a
fresh view of what music-making can be and opens
everyone's ears to the sonic possibilities found
among everyday objects. The paper techniques
and the skill of playing against a prerecorded track
are interesting for all ages.

l A Pastoral Scene—Zachary Docter. This short
lyrical piece will be an excellent addition to any
concert. Whether it's used as a warm-up during
practice or as a concert piece at a performance,
audiences and performers alike will surely enjoy its
serene pastoral atmosphere, satisfying harmonies,
and folklike melodies.

Peat Fire Flame—Travis J. Weller. This piece is
based on a Scottish folk song, sung around fires
built with dried peat from the bogs. The music tells
the story of a journey, beginning with a somber and
somewhat melancholy melody. It soon takes on a
more upbeat feel as the tempo picks up and the
mood becomes more jovial and lively, pressing on
to the bright and spirited ending.

1812 Overture (Highlights)—arr. Robert Longfield.
This perennial concert favorite by Tchaikovsky has been
expertly arranged for concert band by Robert Longfield.
It can stand alone as a grade 3 composition, or it can
be performed in a mass band setting by using the
supplementary grade 1 and grade 2 sets of parts (sold
separately). Percussionists will have a "blast" emulating
cannon sounds and church bells.

Bandorama—Larry Clark & Sandy Feldstein. In the very
first performance of this piece, the conductor performed
with over 850 musicians! Talk about a "Band-o-rama"!
For years, directors have asked for pieces that can be
performed with mass bands, whether as a culminating
number in a multi-school concert, or as a recruitment tool
to keep younger bandsmen motivated. In some instances,
one school will have multiple bands, each at a different
ability level. This piece will meet the need if any of this
sounds familiar to you. The amazing aspect of this piece,
is that the "sets" that encompass three levels of difficulty,
elementary, middle or junior high, and high school, work as
an independent piece. The music simply gets better as the
groups are combined. What a great idea!

Hudson River Run—Michael Sweeney. Take an exciting
boat race on the majestic Hudson River with this energy-
filled work that's propelled by an unrelenting eighth-note
pulse and energizing percussion. The piece uses a variety
of textures and styles, and the melodic elements are
passed around to all sections. As an added bonus, parts
are included for beginning players, allowing this to be used
with a multilevel massed band extravaganza.

Ode to Joy—arr. Robert Longfield. The thrilling chorus
from Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 is skillfully arranged for
mass band performances. Three levels of students, Grades
1 through 3, can perform this masterwork simultaneously,
or the Grade 3 setting can be performed alone. It's perfect
for combining varying levels of bands for an end-of-
semester grand finale.

River Rendezvous (Multilevel Combined Bands)—
Michael Sweeney. While conceived as a work for
multilevel band festivals, it also serves as a dynamic
standalone composition for Grade 3 bands. Representing
moods and scenes of southern Wisconsin, the two
contrasting movements may be performed separately
or together. The primary themes in each movement are
simple enough for beginning players and are embellished
and developed in the more advanced levels. A multifaceted
extravaganza with powerful programming possibilities.

Scalin' and Wailin'—Thomas C. Duffy. This work is a
flexible, fun piece written with a differentiated instruction
model. Three different difficulty levels meet students
where they're at in their development and allows space
for each to grow. This work is also ideal for educators
and conductors looking for "side by side" programming.
Younger ensembles can all play within the easiest group
and more advanced ensembles can play within the more
difficult groups - all fitting together in one energetic piece.

Shorewood Overture—Michael Sweeney.
Shorewood Overture is designed to be performed by multi-
level bands. Rather than the typical massed band number
in which everyone plays at once, this ingenious overture
allows each level to be featured briefly by itself, along
with sections when everyone plays together. In addition,
the Level 3 parts include cues, allowing the work to be
performed by a single ensemble. This is ideal for district-
wide festivals!

Waltzing Matilda—arr. Randay Navarre.
An unofficial national anthem of Australia, heard in movies,
documentaries, and anytime there is a mention of the
"land down under." It is a great song on its own, telling the
story of the traveling migrant throughout the outback. This
version can be performed alone or with the elementary
version for an impressive combined band performance.

Winged Victory (Beacons of Light)—Brian Balmages.
This heroic sounding composition begins with a soft
chorale, then bursts into life with a theme based on The
Drunken Sailor. There are several performance possibilities
with this piece. Your high school band may play it as
written, or the middle and/or elementary school bands may
join the older players in a combined presentation playing
the supplemental parts, available separately. A grand work!
