H Moanin'—Bobby Timmons/arr. Mark Taylor. Your
piano player will get some well-deserved attention
in this familiar Bobby Timmons' chart. The saxes
grab the melody from the piano, and everyone gets
in on the action for some real nice moments in the
chorus. Written solos are included for piano, tenor
and/or trumpet. The quality of Mark's arranging on
this really lets you sell it!

The Mudbug Strut—Paul Baker. A New Orleans
street parade comes to life with this chart! A
2nd line snare drum beat drives the Dixie-based
ensemble, complete with tailgate trombone. There
are written solos for trombone, alto sax, plunger
trumpet, and bass, and tuba may be substituted for
the bass for even more authenticity. An additional
clarinet part is included as well. An exchange
between the drums and ensemble leads to a roll
off that launches the shout section and traditional
ending. The trumpet range goes to written high G
and trombone to F. Highly recommended!

My Little Suede Shoes—Charlie Parker/arr. Mark
Taylor. This chart uses a light samba feel to craft a
marvelous setting of this Charlie Parker standard
for the Little Big Band format. Perfectly scored tutti
ensemble figures are contrasted with feature spots
for a duet of alto sax and trumpet. Easy flowing
rhythms and modest ranges make this one easy to
learn! A great choice!

Nardis—Miles Davis/arr. Paul Murtha. The
definitive recording of this jazz classic is by Bill
Evans, with other notable recordings by Cannonball
Adderley and Joe Henderson. Paul Murtha's
arrangement for developing groups features a Latin
style on the head then switches to swing on the
bridge. This really nice chart also includes very
effective writing for all sections of the band as well
as written or improvised solo space for alto sax.
Highly recommended!

Taylor. This swing classic from bebop legend
Charlie Parker belongs in every jazz library. The
easy melody and blues changes make this a
perfect fit for younger players. This classy chart

line of three saxes, trumpet, and trombone,
followed by feature spots for the sax section, and
finally a marvelous tutti for the entire ensemble.
This chart's got it all!

One Cool Cat!—Rob Vuono, Jr. A playful melody
sauntering along a beguiling chord progression is
featured in this enjoyable chart. The intro leads way
to the cool sounds of trumpet and alto sax on melody,
with tenor saxes and trombones later joining in on a
countermelody. There is an open solo section with
ad lib or written solos, with swinging backgrounds
adding some punch. Great ensemble writing ensues
after the solo section leading to a brilliant shout
chorus. This is one cool chart you just can't miss!

Orange Sherbert—Sammy Nestico. Originally
recorded in 1975 by Count Basie and titled
because Basie loved orange sherbert, this fresh
setting features easy registers, strong jazz figures,
and a bright, free swinging style. A written or ad lib
trumpet solo in the midsection and an ensemble
shout before the final chord are highlights. The
rhythm section parts are notated with chords cued,
and a guitar chord chart is included.

H
Pennsylvania 6-5000—Jerry Gray/arr. John
Berry. Here's a perfect touch of swing era nostalgia

Perdido—Juan Tizol/arr. Mark Taylor. One of
the favorites performed by the Duke Ellington
Orchestra, Perdido is a happy and upbeat riff tune
set in a swing style. This great sounding chart in
the six-horn format (3 saxes, 2 trumpets, trombone
and rhythm section) features variety in scoring, an
open solo section, and a terrific shout chorus for
the entire ensemble. Additional optional parts are
included for alto, tenor and trombone. Perfect for
additional opportunities for key players!

Say What?—Paul Baker. In the relaxed swinging
tradition of Sammy Nestico and Count Basie, the
title refers to the conversation that begins in the
melody as two groups call and respond to each
other. Trumpet range is to written G; trombone
range is to F. After the melody is thoroughly
discussed, the chart moves on to a 16-bar written
piano solo which is followed by a 16-bar written
tenor sax solo. Chord changes are provided for
both. A powerful shout chorus is followed by a
return to the bridge and then a final hard-swinging
hurrah before the classic Count Basie piano ending.

H Sing, Sing, Sing—Louie Prima/arr. Victor Lopez.
Yep, this is the Sing, Sing, Sing you know and
love, made famous by Gene Krupa and the Benny
Goodman Orchestra, only arranged for young
players by Victor Lopez. The classic drum solo that
can be opened up for as much excitement as the
crowd can stand, along with a written-out tenor
solo, reasonable brass ranges and lots of meaty
ensembles keep this great chart exciting. It will
also sound full with reduced instrumentation or
with the optional, non-jazz band parts. It's still a
showstopper! Highly recommended!

figures, followed by a tutti ensemble section before
returning to the head. Instrumentation: six horns
(ATB saxes, two trumpets, one trombone) plus four
rhythm with optional additional parts for alto, tenor
and trombone. Don't miss this chart on the iconic
Miles Davis standard!
