an urgency about it, with brief moments of release
before tension begins to build again. Percussion
plays a big role throughout, and a twist occurs
toward the end as the inexhaustible energy moves
into a fiery conclusion.

Imagine the industrial sounds the Tin Man might
hear when bopping around Pittsburgh when city life
centered around its busy steel mills and factories.
The percussion section enhances the mechanical
nature of this quirky, programmatic piece.

Walk Like a Spartan—William Palange. This
fun and funky tune got its title from a school-wide
competition to provide a title. The catchy, dance-
like music creates a fun atmosphere, and the title
fits perfectly with the main theme and spirit of the
piece as the Spartan is the school district's mascot.

A Welcome Voice—Lewis Hartsough/arr. Frank
McKinney. Lewis T. Hartsough wrote "I Hear Thy
Welcome Voice" in 1872 at a revival meeting in
Epworth, Iowa. This lyrical setting explores the rich
sonority available to the young concert band. The
opening melody is heard in the dark, rich, full sound
of the clarinets' chalumeau register and is doubled
by the baritone. As the piece slowly unfolds, it offers
the hymn in increasingly dramatic fashion up to its
glorious resolution and final Amen.
