BIG BAND STANDARDS / BALLADS very easy & easy
Yuriko—Billy Byers. This is a quintessential
original chart for the Count Basie Orchestra.
Originally recorded on Basie Land, the easy swing
feel and tempo make this piece very accessible to
most bands. There is a bit of flute in two saxophone
parts. There are solos for tenor, trumpet, and
piano. Of course there is the required masterful
shout chorus that leads to a quiet, cool ending.
The ranges make this a very accessible chart for
developed bands.

accessible and will be an excellent programming
choice for any level band. You will also like the
great writing for the saxophones. Written solos are
provided as well. The trumpet range is to written top
space E in the staff, with flugelhorns being optional.

ballad that achieved notoriety as the theme song for
television's Mike Hammer series. While not a feature
ballad, the saxophone section takes the spotlight
here while the brass adds background figures to
spice things up. Also included is a written solo or
soli for saxes. Play it with full band or with as few
as 4 saxes, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones and rhythm
section. Add more color by including the optional

H
Li'l Darlin'—Neal Hefti/arr. Roy Phillippe. This
chart should be in every young band's library! Neal
Hefti's famous tune is the quintessential slow swing
ballad in the Basie style, and every jazzer should be
familiar with it. In this superb edition, the arranger
has changed the key and reorchestrated the parts
so it is playable by ensembles at any ability level,
and with reduced instrumentation as well. The
notes are easy, but there's more music here than
in many more difficult charts. If your students play
only a handful of jazz tunes in their life, this should
be one of them.
