Perhaps one of the Beatles' lesser known tunes, Blackbird remains one of their most creative and memorable. Mike Tomaro's smooth setting uses a blend of light funk along with a brief samba section to create a truly outstanding effect. The theme is stated simply in the beginning by trumpet, followed by an array of orchestrational textures and harmonies. The haunting and distinctive Blackbird, from The Beatles' White Album, is adapted here in a moderate and soft samba style in the Little Big Band format. This is a major work for jazz ensemble at 9 to 10 minutes that students and players will want to work on. Solid saxophone parts, tempo changes, mature brass figures, and a whole lot of fun!
