Dragonrider—Steve Parsons. Take your audience
on a twisting, soaring journey astride a powerful
fire-breathing dragon as it flies over mountaintop
castles and the roaring sea. Inspired by the imagery
of popular fantasy works such as those by J.R.R.
Tolkien, George R.R. Martin, and J.K. Rowling, the
piece is filled with exciting percussion and wind
effects that still sit well within the range and reach
of most concert and symphonic bands.

Elements—Brian Balmages. Four short
movements make up this "petite symphony"
constructed in the same form as the elements of
a traditional symphony: Allegro non troppo; Largo;
Scherzo and Allegro vivace. Each movement also
refers to an element of nature. Movement 1, Air,
is light and breathy, made up mostly of staccato
notes. Water, the second movement, ripples and
flows softly and gently. An homage to Holst's The
Planets can be heard in Earth, the third movement.
The piece concludes in an intense inferno with Fire.
A powerful and cleverly composed piece!

Fantasy on Yankee Doodle—arr. Mark
Williams. This is a refreshing and exciting work!
Yankee Doodle seems like such a simple melody,
but it's amazing how well Mark Williams develops
it using a set of variations. Although opened by a
humorous statement of the theme by solo tuba,
you'll soon find that this is not a novelty piece.
The varied styles and moods are displayed in well-
written music that is perfectly held together by the
original theme. Excellent!
