l Variation Overture—Clifton Williams/arr. Clarence
E. Barber. From its premiere years ago, this work
has been a hugely successful classic. Presented
as a concert overture, the theme and variations are
immensely enjoyable to perform and to hear, time
and time again. The level of difficulty is deceiving, as
the work sounds more difficult than it is technically.
This arrangement is for flexible ensemble.

Variations on Scarborough Fair—Calvin Custer.
First published in 1989, this work has become a
proven band classic. With the first statement of
the theme played by a solo flute accompanied by
vibes and bells, this very musical, sensitive set of
variations spotlights woodwind and brass choirs
and also includes a Bach-like fugue variation. Truly
symphonic band writing at its best.

Voices of the Sky—Samuel Hazo. The many
qualities and changes in appearance of the sky
are translated into musical moods through this
expressive work. The opening lyric section flows
between soloistic and full ensemble playing and
leads to a "sinister" fast section of driving rhythms
and mixed meter that crescendos to a powerful new
setting of the original melody to close the work.
Impeccable timing and emotional pacing sustain
and propel this effective work.

Wayfaring Stranger—arr. Christopher M. Nelson.
This lush and colorful setting of the folk song Poor
Wayfaring Stranger grabs hold of your heart and
doesn't let go until the final notes of the piece.
Masterful orchestration and innovative yet sensitive
treatment of the original folk song characterize this
arrangement, which is sure to become a classic
work for wind band. Exquisite!

We May Rise—arr. Preston Hazzard. This tender
melody was originally a choral work entitled All
Praise to Thee with text based on a chorale
written by Martin Luther and first published in
1524. This wonderfully musical melody has been
beautifully reimagined for this outstanding work
for wind band. The wide variety of instrumental
colors is extremely effective in capturing and
enhancing the rich harmonies and haunting
melody of the original.

H West Highlands Sojourn—Robert Sheldon.
Inspired by the composer's journey through
the western hill country of England and Wales,
this delightful piece borrows from folk melodies
he heard on a river near the Scottish border.
The three sections of the piece provide very
effective contrast and, with Sheldon's artful
scoring, this is an excellent choice for concert or
contest. Splendid!

is a unique and creative setting of the familiar tune

Winds of Change—Randall Standridge. Winds
that flow across the landscape now provide
energy - and the inspiration for this piece. The
quiet introduction depicts the great open spaces
that stretch for miles as gentle morning breezes
begin. Small gusts of wind, represented by scale
passages and arpeggiated figures, dance across
the landscape. The pace picks up until the music
soars, much like the wind racing across the land,
turning the turbines and charging exuberantly
towards the future.

stated as the child tosses the coin into the well with
the hope the wish will be granted.

l
Arabian Sandscapes—Rossano Galante.
This stunning work opens with a bold unison
statement of the main theme by the brass. After
the introduction, a rhythmic ostinato follows in the
winds, which, by adding the horns and trumpets,
creates an even more heroic feel. This then yields
to a lyrical, plaintive theme for a contrasting section
in this emotional work. A recapitulation of the main
theme drives the piece to a riveting climax depicting
the faraway lands of Arabia.
