Presented as a concert overture, the theme and variations are immensely enjoyable to perform and to hear, time and time again. The level of difficulty is deceiving, as the work sounds more difficult than it is technically. First published in 1989, this work has become a proven band classic. The many qualities and changes in appearance of the sky are translated into musical moods through this expressive work. The opening lyric section flows between soloistic and full ensemble playing and leads to a "sinister" fast section of driving rhythms and mixed meter that crescendos to a powerful new setting of the original melody to close the work. This lush and colorful setting of the folk song Poor Wayfaring Stranger grabs hold of your heart and doesn't let go until the final notes of the piece. Masterful orchestration and innovative yet sensitive treatment of the original folk song characterize this arrangement, which is sure to become a classic work for wind band. This tender melody was originally a choral work entitled All Praise to Thee with text based on a chorale written by Martin Luther and first published in 1524. This wonderfully musical melody has been beautifully reimagined for this outstanding work for wind band. The wide variety of instrumental colors is extremely effective in capturing and enhancing the rich harmonies and haunting melody of the original. 10910750 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . .75.00 H West Highlands Sojourn—Robert Sheldon. Inspired by the composer's journey through the western hill country of England and Wales, this delightful piece borrows from folk melodies he heard on a river near the Scottish border. The three sections of the piece provide very effective contrast and, with Sheldon's artful scoring, this is an excellent choice for concert or contest. The journey begins with the a strong message of hope and wonder. As night falls, the music become tranquil and serene while the travelers pause to make camp under a blanket of stars. When day breaks the journey resumes, resplendent with the sounds of exploration and adventure. 11200162 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . .80.00 l Westridge Overture—James Barnes/arr. Clarence E. Barber. This work for early intermediate bands is a wonderful selection for opening a concert and is playable by any SSATB combination of woodwind, brass, and string players with optional percussion. Torian, Jr. This work is built on one of the composer's most known canons and is a flowing, musical representation of this classic. Carol Brittin Chambers. Feature a trombonist and trumpet player with this beautiful adaptation of O Waly, Waly. The climactic moment results in a beautiful chorale that brings out the colors of the ensemble. Here is a unique and creative setting of the familiar tune Greensleeves (What Child Is This?) that opens with the melody scored softly for the woodwinds. The full ensemble contributes a series of harmonically rich phrases until the work reaches and emotional climax at the powerfully scored key change. While this is certainly effective as a holiday offering, it can be performed as a memorable tone poem any time of the year. 10051805 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . .75.00 Whispers and Shouts—Andrew Yozviak. Starting out reflectively, this wonderful work picks up the movement with musical peaks and valleys of joy and intimacy that will leave the listener deeply affected. The faster section takes up the heartfelt melody while woodwinds play brilliant flourishes. The vast array of colors and moods that come from this piece will make an impression on your students. This original folk-sounding work is packed with opportunities for historical study as well as historically accurate instruments. Winds that flow across the landscape now provide energy - and the inspiration for this piece. The quiet introduction depicts the great open spaces that stretch for miles as gentle morning breezes begin. Small gusts of wind, represented by scale passages and arpeggiated figures, dance across the landscape. The pace picks up until the music soars, much like the wind racing across the land, turning the turbines and charging exuberantly towards the future. 10604532 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . .85.00 The Wishing Well—Rossano Galante. The Wishing Well depicts a touching musical scene of a child approaching a well and making a wish. The music ebbs and flows utilizing solos and full ensemble to describe the water at the bottom of the well. As we reach the climax, the main theme is stated as the child tosses the coin into the well with the hope the wish will be granted. 11001740 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . .75.00 With Each Sunset—Richard Saucedo. Composed with delicate orchestrations and tender melodies, this work presents an uplifting setting for concerts and festivals. A mixture of soloists and ensemble scoring is employed as well as careful pacing to provide emotional peaks and releases. Top clinicians and conductors consistently turn to this composer for expertly crafted, intensely emotional compositions, and this one is a superb example of his work. This high-energy piece opens with a brief, powerful introductory fanfare that leads to a rapidly paced set of melodic fragments, contours, and rhythms taken from the well-known Austrian Hymn. The music then hurls its way through a spectacular variety of meters, interspersed and highlighted with sharp statements of percussive punctuation. 11200173 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . .80.00 Ye Banks and Braes O' Bonnie Doon—Percy Grainger. This is a real gem! In the typically understated style of Percy Grainger, this delightful work, originally published in 1936, is incredibly nice. Clarence E. Barber. A flexible ensemble arrangement based on the second edition rescored by the composer, playable by any SSATB combination of woodwind, brass, and string players with optional percussion. Since its publication, it has become one of the composer's most popular works and has been arranged for a variety of ensembles. The composer writes, "I composed this little piece so that younger players would have the opportunity to play a piece that is more or less in the style of [Grainger's] Irish Tune from County Derry." 11355739 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . .60.00 Concert and Contest Selections Medium-Advanced H Abram's Pursuit—David Holsinger. Pursuit, indeed! This rampaging work is a careening chase that starts with a bang and doesn't let up until the final notes! Inspired by the biblical story from Genesis, Holsinger has created a furious up-tempo composition marked with vivid accents, flurrying woodwind and keyboard percussion writing, and incessant percussion that rhythmically drives the piece. Extremely exciting and vibrant stuff for mature bands! 2407575 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . .90.00 H Africa: Ceremony, Song and Ritual—Robert W. Smith. This intriguing work by Robert W. Smith is driven by a large percussion section and fascinating effects. In the final movement the composer even suggests encircling the audience with percussion for an incredible effect. A stunning work! 2301711 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . .90.00 H American Salute—Morton Gould/arr. Lang. This is a tribute to all things American, based on When Johnny Comes Marching Home. Holsinger. In this work, a theme alluding to ancient polyphony is transformed it into a pulse-pounding, finger- twisting, raucous set of breathless variations so typical of this composer's unique style. This stunning work is a tour de force of Middle Eastern sounds for the contemporary wind band. From delicate and sensual soloistic writing to full-blown ensemble passages with rapid-fire tutti rhythms and frenzied percussion, here is a rewarding piece of drama and depth that will be the high point of any concert or festival program. 10072290 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . .125.00 l Arabian Sandscapes—Rossano Galante. This stunning work opens with a bold unison statement of the main theme by the brass. After the introduction, a rhythmic ostinato follows in the winds, which, by adding the horns and trumpets, creates an even more heroic feel. This then yields to a lyrical, plaintive theme for a contrasting section in this emotional work. A recapitulation of the main theme drives the piece to a riveting climax depicting the faraway lands of Arabia. 11354864 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . .90.00 l The Archangel Gabriel—Brooke Pierson. Based on the hymn The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came, this work explores the dark and the light and the deliverance of the news of the Annunciation. The work juxtaposes the hymn with a blend of new material and traditional holiday music.
