Suite From Mass—Leonard Bernstein/arr.
Michael Sweeney. Using the monumental work
to draw from, this suite focuses on a select
number of movements, often using the brass
quintet to represent the vocal lines found in the
original. Striking and beautiful, it includes Alleluia,
Sanctus, A Simple Song, Agnus Dei, Offertory and
Almighty Father. Scored for brass quintet and
wind ensemble, there are ample cues provided to
allow this to be performed by wind ensemble or

Sunshine—Katahj Copley. This bright work utilizes
color, rhythm, and melody to propel itself forward.
This piece was written to resemble the sun and
the many colors it can show throughout the world.
The meter is used effectively to push the piece
forward in the latter half, and it presents some
great opportunities for the woodwinds to achieve
with some faster lines along with some beautiful
melodic lines for the whole band. This work will be
one that will leave an impression on your students
and audiences alike.

thrilling programmatic work, this portrays the
journey of a group of titans in their quest to retrieve
a stolen sword that was lost in battle. The music

H Tempered Steel—Charles Young. The key word
here is "steel"... or metal. Metal clangs, it blows,
it vibrates, it excites, and it has strength. This
urgent, driving piece has those qualities, and
you'll find it's a neat and unique addition to the
repertoire. Expressing a celebration of our triumph
over unavoidable hardships and obstacles we
regularly face that force us to be stronger, resilient,
or "tempered," the piece explores the metallic
sonorities of the wind band to great effect.

Theme and Fugue from The Young Person's
Guide to the Orchestra—Benjamin Britten/
arr. Richard L. Saucedo. Originally composed to
introduce the various instruments of the orchestra,
this set of variations by Benjamin Britten is based on
a melody by Henry Purcell. In this setting for wind
band, the opening theme is presented and then
followed the exuberant fugue which culminates in
a glorious finale and recap of Purcell's melody. A
stunning work for mature ensembles.

Written in a grand "film score" style, this work opens

Turkish Fragments—Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov/arr.
John R. Bourgeois. A richly melodic suite highlighted
by distinctly oriental musical characteristics. Four
movements make up the suite: Caravan, reminiscent
of steady travel over a sea of sand; At Rest, which
is both tranquil and lively; Night, serenely flowing
in nature with a slight air of mystery; and Festival,
dance-like and exuberant. Material from folk music
of the Turkish region is combined with a wide pallet
of instrumental colors to weave an exotic tapestry
uniquely intriguing in its appeal.

Until the Scars—John Mackey. This striking
adaptation has all the intensity and drama of the
original. The powerful opening creates high drama,
as if mighty forces gather to prepare for battle. Once
assembled, the music takes on a quieter but more
suspenseful nature, the tension building as the
forces grow close. Concluding in a virtual firestorm
of sound and fury, all the forces of winds, percussion
and brass combine for a breathtaking finish.

Urban Dances—Erik Morales. Rhythm is the key
element of this vibrant and contemporary piece
which incorporates many of the rhythms found in
today's popular music. The melodic and thematic
elements, while important, play a supportive and
secondary role. In many instances the thematic
material floats over the rhythmic pulse creating a
double time feel. It's lively and persistent throughout
with very active and involved percussion.

H Variations on a Korean Folk Song—John
Barnes Chance. A very deservedly popular
composition consisting of five contrasting variations
on a lyrical Korean folk song. Stated first in unison
by the woodwinds, the material is brilliantly explored
and developed, and the use of Oriental harmonies is
tastefully controlled. The percussion section is used
extensively, both rhythmically and melodically.

H Variations on a Shaker Melody—Aaron
Copland. Scored for band by the composer, this

Victory—Rossano Galante. Sweeping melodic
lines interact with gorgeous textures and powerful
fanfares in this masterful work about achieving

joy contrast lyrical melodies that represent sadness
before the entire work culminates in a grandiose
return of the main theme.

major contribution that's sure to become a part

manner of musical sorcery is used to represent
the turbulent lives of these vastly misunderstood
