Symphony No. 39 in G Minor—Josef Haydn/
arr. Stephen Chin. This is the second of the Haydn
symphonies in a minor key. It is a classic Sturm und
Drang and accordingly reflects strong changes of
emotion. An excellent choice for expanding classical
repertoire as well as reinforcing classical playing
techniques and playing in the key of G minor.

Symphony No. 52—Franz Joseph Haydn/arr.
Brendan McBrien. This Haydn symphony movement
is a powerful example of the Sturm und Drang
("storm and stress") style favored by the composer
in the late 1700s. Arranged in D minor for

the music forward with strong themes and energy.

Symphony No. 7 in D Minor—Antonin Dvorak/
arr. Todd Parrish. Though not as well known as
his famous eighth and ninth symphonies, Dvorak's
Symphony No. 7 is a masterpiece worthy of serious
study and performance. The Scherzo movement
has been abridged and simplified from 6/4 to
6/8 for playability, but the spirit of Dvorak comes
through clearly. Full of the composer's trademark
hemiola, this arrangement gives melody and
countermelodies to all parts and ends with an
exciting, powerful conclusion. The optional timpani
part gives even more strength to your performance.

Troika—Sergei Prokofiev/arr. Stephen
Wieloszynski. This charming number takes its name
from a Russian sleigh called a "troika," pulled by
three horses and common in wintertime. The
melody is really quite familiar, bright and bouncy

for school age players, and many techniques are
included, but can be omitted if too hard. Optional
percussion parts are included. This would be a
great choice for a wintertime concert!
