A Ballad of Inis Mor—Doug Spata. The
yearning, Irish-inspired melodies in A Ballad of
Inis Mor (pronounced IN-ish more) evoke a sense
of quiet reflection. The poignant theme begins
in the cello section, rising through the sections
amid flowing accompaniments that ebb and flow
with expressive dynamic and tempo changes.
Graceful embellishments, optional shifting, part
independence, and a variety of rhythms will
encourage listening across the ensemble to create
an elegant, unified sound.

Baltic Dance—Kirt Mosier. Baltic Dance is the
winner of the 1993 National School Orchestra
Association Composition Contest. This energetic
composition depicts the dance that citizens of the
Baltic States have danced in celebration of their 1991
declaration of independence from the Soviet Union.

Krass. This high-energy piece will have your players
rising to the challenge. The unpredictable Black Sea

Brief interludes in 7/8 are actually a relatively easy
3+2+2 and the dynamic changes and accents are
a blast to play.

Chicharra—Nicolas Repetto. A syncopated motive
in the viola and cello sections starts this diabolical
journey of dance and lyricism. The driving rhythms
and lyrical lines are infused with elements of the
tango, including the chicharra technique of playing
behind the bridge! A contrasting B section in 6/8
is almost waltz-like, showing the softer side of this
dance journey before resuming the original melody
with rhythm and fire.

Chimera—Eric Davis. This high-energy work is
based on the Greek mythological fire-breathing
monster that has a lion's head, a goat's body and
a serpent's tail. Three themes representing each of
these interact with one another and move through
a series of musical episodes in a battle between
the beast and the hero, Bellerophon. Fun to play
from the dramatic opening to the exciting and
heroic conclusion!
