l Tango from Espana—Isaac Albeniz/arr. Robert
Longfield. The Tango from Espana was initially
written for piano by Isaac Albeniz. The composer
was known for his conducting and his virtuoso
piano playing. Graceful melodies, rich harmonies,
and classic tango rhythms characterized this
piece's understated elegance. This elegance and
quiet beauty can be enhanced by an unhurried
tempo and expressive melodic playing. All parts
can be played in first position except the first violin
which has a high C.

Theme from Symphony No. 1, Mvt. 3—Gustav
Mahler/arr. Brad Pfeil. This versatile arrangement
is a great showcase for your bass players and also
provides an optional harp feature. The famous
opening solo can be played in first position or
thumb position and as a bass solo or soli with
an optional timpani part. While mostly in first
position, this piece offers great opportunities for all
instruments to explore higher positions. Students
will love the simplicity of Mahler's haunting melody,
while being challenged to maintain a slow, steady
tempo.

The Viol Habit—Paul W. Whear/arr. Jennifer
Davenport. This staple of the bass solo repertoire
is now available as a feature for your bass section.
The orchestral accompaniment is very light and
requires good counting skills, but nothing over a
Grade 2. The robust, bouncy first theme in D major
and 2/4 is followed by a lyric waltz section in G
major. The first theme returns for the grand finale.

Viva Amadeus!—Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart/
arr. Richard Meyer. What begins with the
universally recognizable introduction to Eine Kleine
Nachtmusik makes an unexpected turn "south of
the border" in this fresh and creative Latin take on
the classic Mozart masterpiece. Latin rhythms with
syncopations and triplets are explored. Optional
Latin percussion provides the perfect spice. A sure
to be a concert favorite!

thanks in part to its use as a TV theme. While
somewhat challenging, there are optional easy
string and percussion parts included that make this

would make!

H The Abduction from the Seraglio—W.A.
Mozart/arr. Jamin Hoffman. From the comic opera
filled with pirates, Turkish princes, kidnapping
and daring rescues, Mozart's The Abduction from
the Seraglio is the piece of music that generated
the (possibly fictional) "too many notes" story. It
is written in the Turkish "janissary" style, a style
of music that fascinated Europe at the time. In
this arrangement, the right hand of the piano is
frequently written 8va to help re-create the piccolo
that figured prominently in the original.

Adagio—Thomaso Albinoni/arr. Jamin Hoffman.
Finally, an arrangement of Albinoni's most famous
work that can be played at your group's level. This
achingly beautiful music is certainly one of the high
points of all Baroque music. Give your strings a
chance to play this one!

H Allegretto—Ludwig van Beethoven/arr. Rick
England. Absolutely perfect for cross-curricular
study in middle school or high school! Prometheus,
through trickery, stole fire from Zeus, gave it to
mortals and was punished daily for eternity for his
crime. Beethoven's melody itself has a bit of trickery
and a good deal of moxy as it weaves through each
section of the orchestra. The story and Beethoven's
marvelous music will provide good discussion
among the players and even your audience.

Allegretto Grazioso—Antonin Dvorak/arr. Robert
Sieving. Here's the 3rd movement from "Symphony
#8," one of Dvorak's most famous works and
it certainly carries his penchant for memorable
melodies! Allegretto Grazioso, is actually based
on a song from an earlier opera, and the coda
in a faster tempo recalls the Slavonic Dances.
These infectiously joyous melodies will be loved by
students and audiences alike.

Eastern European influences mark this string
orchestra arrangement of Bartok's famous piano
piece. Your students will thrive on the energy and

master. Harmonically complex and extremely
compelling - once you listen to this, you'll be hooked!

Caponegro. Containing selected themes from the

shows his brilliance. Mozart's adventurous approach
to the material paves the way for Beethoven and
other symphonic composers to follow.

Allegro from Serenade No. 1 in D—W.A. Mozart/
arr. Robert D. McCashin. This delightful Serenade
in D was completed in 1769, when Mozart was a
mere 13 years of age (an ideal fact to share with
young students)! The first movement, even though
composed at such a young age, provides challenges
for every musician in the ensemble and is musically
appealing to players and audience.

Beethoven's captivating melody that begins this
Andante is one of the most famous cello/viola
melodies ever written. This strings-only edition
allows the ensemble to experience even more of
Beethoven's melodic genius while evening out
some of the complexities of the original opus. The
result is a respectful look at the German master that
developing groups and their audiences will enjoy.

in 1922, Andante festivo was rescored by the
composer in 1938 for string orchestra with timpani.
The work emphasizes the warmth and rich sonority
of the string orchestra, reflecting a hymnlike
ceremonial quality. Broad lyrical phrases explore
a wide range of dynamic contrast, phrasing, bow
distribution, and orchestral color.
