La Forza del Destino Overture—Giuseppe
Verdi/arr. Michael Hopkins. The overture to La Forza
Del Destino was composed when Italian composer,
Giuseppe Verdi, revised his opera for a performance
at La Scala in 1869. This arrangement captures
the full range of thematic contrasts and emotion
present in the original and will be challenging and
rewarding for developing orchestras. Verdi intended
the opening agitated theme to represent fate, and
this melodic them unifies many different thematic
ideas in the overture. A musical metaphor for the
force of destiny - chaotic on the surface, yet logical
and coherent in the depth of its design.

La Rejouissance, Sarabande, and Gigue—
G.P. Telemann/arr. Robert D. McCashin. These
three movements: La Rejouissance, Sarabande,
and Gigue, are taken from Telemann's seven
movement Suite in D, originally composed for
trumpet and orchestra. An excellent introduction to
late Baroque style playing for intermediate students,
featuring contrasting tempos, dotted rhythms, and
compound time signatures in playable first position.
Includes violin 3 (viola in treble clef) and alternate
viola (violin 2 in alto clef) parts.

Lacrimose—W.A. Mozart/arr. Leonard Ingrande.
A fine and accurate arrangement for string
orchestra of the final section of the Dies Irae
movement of Mozart's Requiem in D minor. 12/8
time is reinforced. Much of the shifting is in the
second violins. Optional timpani.

l Largo and Allegro Assai—William Boyce/arr.
Robert McCashin. These two movements are taken
from a trio sonata by William Boyce. The lyrical
Largo section is a wonderful opportunity to teach
legato, and the Allegro movement reinforces fugal
writing and Baroque brush-stroke technique. Cello
and bass double throughout, violin 2 and viola
double in the Allegro movement. Cello and bass
have easy shifting.

Maelstrom—Katie O'Hara LaBrie. A treacherous
storm motif acts as the undercurrent to quotes
from famous water-themed compositions, including
Smetana's Die Moldau, the haunting Aquarium from
Saint-Sans' Carnival of the Animals, and a traditional
Irish sea chantey as melodies overlap in this musical
storm. Developing players will refine articulation
skills while navigating some shifting, chromatic
lines, and a variety of rhythms in 6/8 time.

Nimrod—Edward Elgar/arr. Mitchell Bender. This
ninth variation from Elgar's "Enigma Variations"
is the most played and most beautiful of the
variations. Due to its overwhelming expressive
quality, it has become England's counterpart to
Adagio for Strings, being played when music
of great emotion and dignity is called for in that
country. This fine arrangement moves the key
center from Eb to the more string-friendly D. With
some very nice divisi writing, this makes an ideal
choice for any string orchestra, and especially nice
for larger or combined string orchestras.

an emotive arrangement for your group! John
O'Neill brings this work to an accessible level

The muted intention of Faure's work begs that the
pizzicato bass lines not be rushed, lest the effect be
disturbed. Optional solo features may not leave a
