Adamant—Larry Clark. This dramatic piece
cranks right from the start! The work is set in E
minor (but without any C naturals on the A string)
with simple rhythms no more difficult than two
repeated eighth notes. You will hear some biting
dissonances to the flowing main theme.

Aeolian Rock—Jeffrey Frizzi. This fun-loving
original is guaranteed to motivate beginning string
players by highlighting the strengths of every
section. Unison cellos and basses start off with
an 8-bar groove in A minor before upper strings
come in with a cool melody. Then violas assume
the melodic lead in the middle section of the piece
before a strong tutti finish.

Aftershock—Larry Clark. Beginning with a bold
and aggressive fanfare-type statement and a
number of dramatic pauses, this forceful piece is
sure to make an impact on the audience. Using two
repeated eighth note patterns as the most difficult
rhythm, the theme includes some dissonances that
create musical tension. The dynamics bring out the
emotion of the piece from beginning to end. Intense!

Anchored—Todd Parrish. A fun piece for young
players that reinforces the practice of leaving
fingers down, "anchored" to the fingerboard. With
a nautical flavor, the piece explores staccato and
legato articulation along with striking dynamic
contrast. Low second-finger patterns only occur
in the first violin part, and fourth finger use is
encouraged for all upper strings. The set includes
Viola parts in treble clef and Violin 2 parts in alto clef
for ensemble flexibility. All sections get to play the
powerful melody in this dramatic concert selection!

Antagonist—Larry Clark. In every great story
there is always an antagonist, the character whose
opposing force is central to the success of the
story. This concept has been applied to music in
this selection for string orchestra. The piece is
aggressive and at times purposely antagonizing.
Designed with the youngest of players in mind, it
works on simple repeated eighth-note patterns as
the foundation for the melodic material. Interesting
parts are provided for all instruments, and everyone
gets to play the melody. Impressive!

crescendos and decrescendos, along with short
and long bowing articulations. The minor-key feel
of this work will motivate students from the first
rehearsal to the final performance. Violin 2 and

piece is intended to sound huge, even though it
is written for the youngest of students. The piece
is set in a fanfare style with strong open intervals,
but the technical demands have been limited for
beginning players. Some tension chords with
dissonant notes are used to add to the drama of
the piece. A very sophisticated sounding piece for
