BLUES & SWING
Film Noir Soir—Ed Gaston. Written in the style
of the classic film noir crime dramas of the '40s
and '50s, this incredibly hip original chart is an
excellent and fresh addition to the jazz ensemble
repertoire. A cool, swinging hi-hat that leads
into a hip figure on guitar, bass, piano, bari sax,
optional vibes, and harmon muted trumpets
sets up the atmosphere perfectly. The chart
develops into a hard-swinging ending! Written
solo for alto sax.

Foundation Issues—Paul Baker. This hard-
swinging 12-bar blues features acoustic bass
in a Thad Jones-inspired setting. It cooks right
along and the ensemble provides solid support
for the bass soloist. At a tempo of 140 bpm, this
chart provides a very accessible opportunity for
the unsung hero of the rhythm section to shine.
Soprano sax leads the sax section. A unique
and very cool trombone section plus bass soli is
wrapped between solos for trumpet, soprano sax
and bass before heading into the shout chorus.
Brass ranges: trumpet to written high C and
trombone to G-flat. Bass features are hard to find,
and this one is outstanding!

It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That
Swing)—Duke Ellington/arr. Ralph Ford. You
may think this very clever chart is all swing, but
it begins as Latin then alternates with a swing
feel. The tempo is bright at around 190-200 bpm
with suggested solos for trumpet and tenor sax,
a few piano montunos, and a big shout chorus
leading to a huge ending closing this fine chart
appropriately. Additional wind parts and a
vibes part are included for optional expanded
instrumentations. Highly recommended!

these great solo features. They offer a solo part all the way through with
ample support from the ensemble.
Aria—Rick Lawn. As the title suggests, this is a beautiful melodic feature for alto sax. In
addition to the haunting tune, there are subtle supportive ensemble figures that weave a
rich fabric of accompaniment and include flugelhorns and cup mutes in the trumpet section.
The improvised solo needs only two scales - concert D harmonic minor and E-flat major.
An ensemble chorus follows the solo section and leads to a cadenza before a slower, more
dramatic close. A great opportunity to feature your alto player!

soloing (written or improved) for 12 bars before the band moves in with a cool, quiet, rich
statement of the theme. Give your bass player a shot at this feature! Bass is featured

shines. The flugelhorn solo is entirely written, with some suggested improvisation also included.
A brief double-time section lets the ensemble and soloist stretch out for variety. The lead
trumpet range is to written G on top of the staff, and optional flute and vibraphone parts come
with the set. Highly recommended!

the late 1960s, this familiar ballad lends itself nicely for jazz ensemble treated here as a jazz
waltz. Scored to feature a solo trombone, alternate solo parts are provided for B-flat and E-flat
instruments for added flexibility. This terrific setting features a driving style with solid hits for the
