The style and spirit of the piece has influences
from film and other contemporary American
composers. Enjoy the soaring melodies and
many colors of a cross-country train ride through
the multifaceted scenes of America.

Cumberland Cross—Carl Strommen. Sure to
delight, the central portion of this original piece
brings the unrestrained exuberance of bluegrass
fiddling to the orchestra. In a lovely contrast,

bringing to mind sunset and sunrise over
the mountains.

Dark Adventure—Ralph Ford. It's ghostly!
It's creepy! Your orchestra will love it! From the
driving opening motives to the quirky gypsy-
sounding theme, this is haunted-house music at
its best! You can play this with either full or string
orchestra, but the percussion section is really
vital and should be used in both cases. This
is recommended and will thrill and delight your

Dream Machine—Brian Balmages. This haunting,
powerful, and aggressive work draws inspiration
from a type of strobe light that can put an observer
into a state of "threshold consciousness," or
being half asleep. The music portrays sensations
including the eerie feeling of the transitional
sleep state and the intense experience of being
surrounded by swirling shapes and colors, and
then ventures into the world of lucid dreamers. The
result is a piece that is mystical, unsettling, driving,
powerful, and heroic.

Engines of Resistance—Larry Clark. You will
want to program this thrilling music often! As the
title implies, there is dramatic tension between
opposing forces in the orchestra: a light ostinato
pattern opposes a heavy, aggressive melody;
bursts of percussion ring out against quieter
moments in the orchestra, and all these conflicting
elements come together for an incredible finish!
Can be performed as strings and percussion, or
as a full orchestra. A contest winner!

Lux Aurumque—Eric Whitacre. Upon reading
Edward Esch's poem Light and Gold, Eric Whitacre
was immediately struck by its genuine, elegant
simplicity. He asked the celebrated American poet
Charles Anthony Silvestri to translate it into Latin
for his seminal Lux Aurumque for mixed choir a
cappella. A simple approach was essential to the
success of the work, and he waited patiently for
the tight harmonies to shimmer and glow. The
transcription for full orchestra was premiered by
the Minnesota Orchestra.

A Matador's Tale—Mark Lortz. With traditional
Spanish flair, this programmatic work depicts a
bullfight, beginning with the matador's fanfare

instrumental colors burst into splashes of energy
from the brass and rhythm sections, biting
dissonances abound, and a constant surge of
