General Anthems
D Agnus Dei 2020—Jay Althouse. Composed
L
in remembrance of lives lost during the
2020 pandemic, this sparse setting of the
traditional Latin Requiem text is built upon a
melody inspired by a bird's simple three-note
song. Solemn and poignant, this memorable
piece can be effectively sung in either
concert or worship.

D
All I Know—John Purifoy. The pivotal
miracle of the blind man seeing is told from
his perspective: "All I know is Christ changed
me." A soaring melodic theme crowns the
refrain, and the verses exemplify musical
storytelling at its best. Crafted as a sermon
in song, pair this anthem with the related
scripture or with sermons that speak to the
love and mercy of Christ.

All Shall Be Well—Russell Schulz-Widmar. A
timely anthem that speaks to God's constancy
in everchanging times, the melody of this
3-part canon is beautifully written to reflect the
reassuring text. Scored for a cappella choir,
there are also optional parts for keyboard,
flute, and cello accompaniment. This anthem
could creatively work as a unison or 2-part
anthem also.

lt Almighty, Unchangeable God—Cindy Berry/
arr. Richard A. Nichols. Proclaiming a majestic
yet loving Savior, the anthem unfolds with a
soprano solo supported by the choir which
provides dramatic emphasis to parts of the text.
Cluster harmonies with limited divisi make this a
challenging but interesting anthem that praises
an almighty and unchanging Father.

Amazing Grace—arr. Benjamin David
Knoedler. This marvelous new arrangement of
the classic hymn begins with children "oohing"
the melody over a quiet piano accompaniment.
Their sustained "oohs" continue while the
piano takes a verse. Two sung verses are
followed by the hymn ending as gently as it
began. This is a lovely, effective arrangement
of the familiar hymn that can be sung by adults
as well as children.

D Anthem of Rejoicing—Joseph M. Martin.
This vigorous general-use anthem is a
sturdy addition to the choir folder. Solid
four-part writing gives a neoclassic texture,
while strong unison singing delivers power
and confidence to the singers. The middle
section incorporates lines from beloved
hymns, tossing them back and forth with the
anthem's main theme. Add in the optional
handbells for a dazzling effect! Delightful!

D Arise and Sing!—Patricia Mock/arr.
Michael Barrett. Joyful confidence surrounds
this rhythmic anthem of praise! Unfolding
gradually with a series of musical steps, the
opening paints the title in vivid hues. A lightly
contemporary theme delivers syncopations
with well-crafted vocal contours, and the full
and rich choral sound of the refrain affirms the
call to worship with singing. A brief quote from
When Morning Gilds the Skies adds contrast
and a familiar element to the presentation.

Raney. This reflective anthem comes from
the perspective of Jesus, who compels his

Awake, My Soul—Elaine Hagenberg.
A brilliant, pulsating piano introduction
announces the dawn and invites the voices
to join with escalating calls to "Awake, my
soul!" As the pulsing continues, the vocal
counterpoint gives way to the chordal
acclamation, "I will awaken the dawn!" This
setting of Psalm 57:8-11 requires an above
average accompanist and an energetic choir,
but the artistic result will be worth the effort.

depth is a musical balm that covers the listener
with exquisite vocal and harmonic colors at
every measure. It is a song of a loving God who
"never leaves or forsakes," the One who brings
peace and comfort in time of need. Richly

arr. Heather Sorenson. A plea for personal
reawakening from emptiness, this time-

This familiar hymn is treated to a
lighthearted setting that is an easy learn for
your ensemble. The addition of children's
choir supports treble voices, teaches the
hymn, and provides an opportunity for
a multigenerational moment. Beautiful
"alleluias" lead into a final verse with descant
that makes the arrangement shine in a new
way. Use this song for the Blessing of the
Animals service or any time when celebrating
God's creation. Highly recommended!

through the lens of mercy and compassion.
The music is peaceful and very appropriate to
the text with little divisi in the choral parts and
a supportive piano accompaniment.

equally deep and meaningful, lush and lovely.
