We Remember
Joseph M. Martin & Michael E. Showalter.
Drawing upon the biblical admonition to "remember" whenever
communion is celebrated, this anthem from the cantata Portraits
in Grace is a call to the table of grace. A beautiful melody in
minor creates a very moving moment in your worship. Adding full
harmonies brings warmth to the expressive text. This is a piece you
will turn to again and again when you celebrate communion.

Were You There
Kyle Pederson.
L
This version of the great spiritual is rich in text painting and digs
deeply into the emotions portrayed in the words. The arrangement
begins effectively with the sound of the hammer in the low piano
part. Moving from E-flat to E-flat minor for the second verse adds
a brooding timbre. Subsequent verses build in intensity with an
independent piano part, then the arrangement ends subdued with
echoes of the hammer. A haunting choice for Good Friday and the
Lenten season.

Were You There?
arr. John Leavitt.
D
From the cantata Calvary's Mountain, this effective arrangement
of the beloved spiritual is well crafted to deliver a fullness of
sound without raising the level of difficulty. The emotional spiritual
is standard repertoire for churches during Holy Week, and
the restrained approach of this version is a sensitive choice for
Tenebrae or other Holy Week traditions. Simply beautiful!

What Wondrous Love Is This?
arr. Heather Sorenson.
From the cantata What Wondrous Hope, the plaintive strains of this
well-known early American hymn depict the cost of salvation and the
fathomless love of the Creator. A middle section of "Kyrie eleison,"
which repeats with descant, is an effective contrast before moving to
the final verses of the hymn. The quiet "Have mercy upon my soul" is
a prayerful and fitting close to this sensitively written arrangement.

Wondrous Love
arr. Benjamin David Knoedler.
This well-known text is given a strong, new treatment with a
meditative melody, close harmonies, and driving accompaniment.
The text expresses awe at the love of God, building to a song of
praise: "And when from death I'm free, I'll sing on." Knoedler's
arrangement highlights the text at every point and is a beautiful
addition to Lenten, communion, or general worship services
focusing on the love of God.

Now, Even Now, Declare a Fast
arr. Kevin Hildebrand.
A text by Stephen P. Starke is set to the Welsh tune
LLEF. This
easy-to-learn composition is useful throughout the Lenten season,
especially on Ash Wednesday, such as during the imposition of
ashes. Written to be flexible, it may be sung by soloists or two-
part choir, with an optional SATB stanza, and may be modified in
length if desired. An optional part for treble instrument is included.
A moving, thoughtful presentation.

O Jerusalem!
Wayne L. Wold.
Lt
The composer wrote the poetry of this dramatic and stirring anthem
while visiting the Holy Land. The text reflects on Jerusalem's role in
the Passion story and musically captures the emotion with intense
and colorful text painting. Written in four sections: Palm Sunday, the
Upper Room, Gethsemane, and Golgotha; each section ends with
the phrase, "O Jerusalem... city of our salvation." While the score is
more advanced with dissonant and chromatic writing, the recurring
motifs and refrains will aid the learning process. Consider singing
each section as a response to the corresponding Bible verses as the
Passion narrative is read. Very effective.

O Love of God Incarnate
Justin Wedgewood.
Genevieve Glen's reflection on the passion, death, and resurrection
of Christ is effectively set to music for choir, keyboard, guitar, and
solo instrument in C. The included simple hymn version complements
the more involved choral setting which includes an upward
modulation for the third verse. This piece is especially appropriate
during Holy Week, Triduum, and the following Easter Season.

Stay with Me
Heather Sorenson.
The Garden of Gethsemane is the scene for this profoundly
emotional sacred tone poem. Full-spectrum harmonic writing in
the vocal parts brings the shadows of this important moment to life.

to this Holy Week offering.
