LIGHTER SELECTIONS

Abandoned Toy Shop—Timothy Loest.
Orphaned toys come to life in this eerie tour of an
abandoned toy store. The work opens and closes
with Victor Herbert's dreamlike Toyland as a Jack-
in-the-box plays Pop Goes the Weasel. Diminished
chords, tri-tones, and the Dies Irae surround an
aleatoric section that features a whole host of
noisy toys. Highly accessible, extremely creative,
and definitely memorable!

H Abominable Snowman Chase—Robert
W. Smith. Travel to the towering peaks of the
Himalayas in pursuit of this legendary creature!
You won't travel far before you hear the sounds
of his giant footsteps, provided by the percussion
section, and the chase is on! The pace quickens
and you hear his cry as you draw nearer and nearer
until he's just over the next ridge! How does it end?
You'll have to finish this story on your next concert
to find out!

Alpha Dog—Heather Hoefle. Fun and energetic,
your beginning band students will love this. The
infectious groove, handclapping, and driving drum
beat propel this spirited piece all the way to the
end. Using only the first six notes introduced in
most band methods, this piece is an excellent
choice for a school assembly, parent meeting, pep
rally, or concert closer.

featured with a slick, ultra-cool fast-rock backbeat.
All these elements combine to make this one stand
out and make an impression at any concert.

H Bugler's Holiday—Leroy Anderson. In all
probability the most famous trumpet trio ever
written, this Leroy Anderson delight is always
a favorite whenever and wherever it is played!
(Trumpet Trio ME, Band ME)

H Cumberland Cross—Carl Strommen. You'll really
get a nice sound with this one! Carl's original work
explores the rich American folk style in two sections.
The first has broad, moving harmonies under a
Shenandoah-like melody, and the second a lively
dance reminiscent of Copland. Cumberland Cross
is not too difficult, yet very impressive!
2319515 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . .ME 68.00
Cool Breeze—Chris M. Bernotas. There is nothing
like sitting outside in the spring or fall, relaxing and
enjoying a cool breeze! Students will be adding their
own "coolness" as they get a chance to play a solo!
Students can play the written solos (included on
the Educational Packs) or make up their own! The
piece offers a fantastic opportunity to help students
become familiar with swing rhythms and harmonies.

H Creepy Crawlies—Michael Story. Your audience
might squirm a bit when they hear this creepy
novelty! Some cute mouthpiece effects will bring
vivid images of hovering bugs (perhaps too vivid!)
but rest assured, the bug'll get it in the end. Along
with the fun, Mike Story also found room to slip
in some good staccato work and some technique
work for the woodwinds. A fun piece for beginners!

throwback to the Mod style of the 1960s and '70s.
