sense of a tune. With that goal in mind, every instrumentalist and singer
can profit from this book. It covers many techniques for exploring,
understanding, and performing songs found in "The Real Book" series.
You will learn how to analyze the form and harmonic structure, insert an
introduction, interpret the melody, improvise on the chords, construct
bass lines, voice the chords, add substitutions, and much more. Offering
a theory based approach, it addresses many aspects of solo and small
band performance that can improve your own playing and singing, and
your understanding of what others are doing around you. Playing from a
real book is about options. The material presented here will offer you a full
range of techniques that you can put to use right away.

Rhythm First! (A Beginner's Guide to Jazz Improvisation)—
Tom Kamp. In a step-by-step fashion, Rhythm First! builds up the
student's library of rhythmic figures and has them playing along with the
accompanying CD to get the sound and feel of jazz soloing under their
fingers. Melodically, the book starts with playing simple rhythmic figures
on any note, then on the tonic of the F blues scale, followed by the tonic
and one other note. Over the course of the book, it progresses to show
how and when to use three kinds of blues scales. This method is more fun
and therefore more successful in getting students starting to improvise
than many other approaches. A must for any school jazz program!
