Air and Hornpipe—Sondra Tucker. This
spirited winner of the 2021 Into the Forest Bell
Tree Composition Contest uses one 3-5 octave
set of handbells and one 3-5 octave set of
handchimes, with no duplicate bells needed for
the bell tree part. Perfect for a bell tree ringer
with basic bell tree experience who desires a
bit of a challenge, as it is recommended that
the bell tree part be memorized. Much of the
handbell choir accompaniment is played on
chimes, supporting a bright and cheerful bell
tree solo. A great festival opener, this piece is
also lots of fun to play!

Allegretto—Beethoven / arr. Frances
Newell. This lovely movement continues to be
popular as encore or performed apart from
the complete symphony. Capturing the feel of
this 2nd movement, subtle mallet and pluck
techniques provide a lovely variety of sound
and texture. It should be noted that Beethoven
conducted the premiere at a charity function,
honoring the soldiers wounded in battle. Part
of his introduction included: "We are moved
by nothing but pure patriotism and the joyful
sacrifice of our powers for those who have
sacrificed so much for us." This would be a
lovely piece to program not only due to its history
but for its calm sonority and lyrical melody.

Allegro—Cynthia Dobrinski. This original
composition is pure Dobrinski! The initial
theme is expressed in full chords, then the fun

from start to finish, this is a great option for
worship, festival, or concert.

Allegro Brillante—arr. Cathy Moklebust. A
fanfare-like opening gives way to a delicate
melody underscored by malleted bells in a
3+3+2 rhythmic pattern that recurs throughout
the piece. Various moods and emotions are
explored, providing ample opportunity for focus
on musicality and expression. This is an ideal
piece for the advanced ensemble looking for a
worthy musical challenge!

Alleluia—Linda Boatright. This amazing,
sophisticated work is filled with praise and
excitement! Inclusion of randomly whispered
"alleluia" will add to the powerful effect. The
basic 4-note melody (C#, B, F# and E) and
variations on it appear throughout the piece
including handchimes and serves as the basis
for a very nicely developed harmonic structure.
A melody rung in the 4's is featured in a legato
section with bass handchimes supporting it
and higher treble chimes providing interesting
accents. Table mallets and plucks, well-placed
dynamics, and amazing segues all work
together to make this the perfect piece for
concert, Easter, Christmas, or any celebration.

The Bells Must Ring!—John A. Behnke.
This tone poem begins with the mournful
tolling of bells reflecting our painful experience
when handbells could not ring during the
pandemic. Sheer joy that we can ring together
again breaks through with the sound of
flowing bells, at times rhythmically driven with
malleted bass octaves. The two versions are
compatible for massed ringing or multiple
choirs. Winner of the 2021-2022 Handbell
Musicians of America Area 3 Adult Handbell
Festival Composition Contest.

Built On the Rock—arr. Jason W. Krug. A
driving rhythm, established by malleted bells
and optional bodhran and shaker, sets up this
haunting tune. The stark harmonic opening
gradually becomes more complex before a
slower, more ethereal section on chimes sets
the tune in a drawn-out 4/4. The opening
rhythm returns to propel the piece to its
explosive conclusion. A show-stopping choice
for your next service or concert! Instrumental
parts available separately.

A Carillon Passacaglia—Lee J. Afdahl. A
bold melody in octaves (with at optional LV
to mimic the sound of a carillon) gives way
to a series of variations of the theme which
grow in complexity and intensity through to
the big, bold finish. A variety of techniques are
found throughout, and the rhythmic interplay
will challenge groups both technically and
musically. An ideal choice for advanced groups
looking to make a powerful statement!

Celebration for Bells—Robin Benton. Created
for the 20th International Handbell Symposium
in 2022 whose theme is "Out of Many, One,"
this original work by an English composer
begins with a delightful melody that is creatively
developed in this joyous piece. A 'B' section
is lyrical and rung on handchimes before it
segues back to the original theme and style.
Brief malleted and marted note passages add a
nice touch as the piece continues to the exciting
ending. The addition of timpani beautifully
underlays this work which is a fabulous piece
for concert and worship or any celebration!

Champaca—Elizabeth Peters. Champaca is a
plant from which an essential oil is extracted
that is "used as an anti-depressant and said
to soothe and relax the body and strengthen
the mind." This delightful work will certainly lift
the spirits and leave the mind and body feeling
joyful. It dances from beginning to end featuring
time signatures of 6/8 and 2/4 with melodies
and countermelodies intermingling with pulsing
2/4 marted measures. The lilting, triplet-feel
eighth-notes in the upper treble in many of
the 6/8 measures adds to the joy of this work.
LV patterns are featured as accompaniment
to melodies and dynamics range from p to f
with crescendo added for more excitement.
The rhythmic patterns may initially appear to
be challenging but are repeated so it is fully
accessible for the Level 3 group. It will also be
a bit of a challenge for Level 4 and 5 groups to
play flawlessly at tempo.

Contrast—Ron Mallory. This haunting,
expressive original composition is reflective of
the more somber moments in life, which help
us to better appreciate the joyful times. Though
written with a 2-octave handbell or handchime
choir in mind (with no shared bells), a skillful
quartet or quintet could also perform it by
appropriately dividing the bell positions.
Windchimes optional.
