CHRISTMAS LITURGICAL ANTHEMS
The Holly and the Ivy—Thomas Jones. This
music will surprise you as the merriment and
mirth of secular Christmas merges with the
text of a traditional British Christmas carol. A
carol is a dance, and this music dances with
glee at the coming of Christ. A joyous and
provocative anthem that will have you smiling.

I Sing of a Maiden—John Rutter. Setting a
well-loved medieval text, this effective piece
paints the story of Jesus' birth through lyrical
melodies and beautiful harmonic surprises.
The vocal lines offer both powerful intensity
and skillful dialogue and are supported by a
pulsing keyboard part.

In Dulci Jubilo—arr. Steven Van Wye. A
sprightly organ part supports the accessible
choral writing in this setting of the familiar
tune. The macaronic text features Latin
and English over four verses, with the third
intended to be a cappella. The organ returns
for the final verse, building to a big close.

In the Bleak Midwinter—arr. Matthew
Culloton. Matthew Culloton has created a
gorgeous setting of the familiar carol scored
for SATB divisi voices with soprano solo, a
cappella. Beautiful textural and harmonic
touches, alternately simple and complex,
illumine and elevate the text. The thought,
beauty, and emotion in this setting are not to
be missed.

In the Bleak Midwinter—Gustav Holst/arr.
Robert J. Powell. The poignancy of Gustav
Holst's tune
CRANHAM and Christina Rossetti's
notable poem, In the Bleak Midwinter, is
evident in this setting by Robert Powell. The
SAB vocal tapestry varies by verse and the
organ accompaniment can be complemented
by string quartet or by solo violin and cello.

Infant Holy, Infant Lowly—arr. David Lasky.
The familiar Polish carol receives a joyous
treatment. The optional solo descant in the last
verse can be performed either by a wordless
singer or an instrument. This setting is shorter
and thus will make a great second anthem for
the Christmas season.

It Came Upon the Midnight Clear—arr.
Daniel Ficarri. This a cappella setting of the
traditional carol opens with a spotlight on the
tenor section with background choir "oohs."
The second stanza is more homophonic, and
in the third, the carol is sung canonically.
Delicate harmonic shading provides touches
of color as angels wing their way through the
night sky. Lovely.

Jesus Christ the Apple Tree—Scott Bailey.
Scored for SATB voices a cappella, this setting
of the beloved ancient text builds by verse from
unison to homophonic SATB voices in verse
four before returning to unison for most of the
final verse. The E Dorian mode and gentle
mixed meter contribute to a timeless quality.

Joseph's Carol—John Rutter. This carol
recounts the Christmas story from the
perspective of Joseph. Two expressive verses
are taken by the solo baritone, with the chorus
performing a refrain infused with expectancy
and wonder. In the closing words of the second
solo, the choir takes on the role of the angels in
a soft accompaniment. The upper three voice
parts are designed to be approximately equal
in strength, and the carol may be accompanied
by organ or small orchestra. This carol is
dedicated to the Oxford Vaccine Team and
was premiered by Sir Bryn Terfel, The Oxford
Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Choir of
Merton College in a special tribute concert.

A Little Child There is Born—Malcolm
Archer. Cheerful and spritely, this carol
celebrates the birth of Jesus. Supported by
a sparkling organ part, the lilting vocal lines
bounce between 4/4 and 7/8 and are colored
by Archer's rich harmonies. The texture varies
by verse and includes an a cappella section.

Lully, Lulla, Lullay—Philip W. J. Stopford.
Treasured words from the 15th-century carol
are paired with a stunning, newly composed
a cappella setting for mixed choirs. Beautiful
cluster harmonies are interposed with a
more open harmonic structure to create this
wonderful sense of ancient and modern. A
soaring descant enters in the final stanza to lift
the piece to a sublime finish.

Maria Walks amid the Thorn—arr. Russell
Schulz-Widmar. This medieval German carol
centers around the beloved imagery of the
"flowering rose, both ordinary and miraculous."
In this a cappella setting, sopranos sing the
opening stanza accompanied by the remaining
voices, first on "ah," then on "Kyrie eleison,"
and then on the text. The vocal texture
develops in a similarly fluid manner throughout
with lovely tone painting.

Cool. The text and tune of this gently
flowing hymn anthem speaks to the mystery
and wonder of the Incarnation. The piano
accompaniment borrows melodies from well-
known carols to enhance the text and help
the listener make the connection between
the new words while drawing on memories of
the familiar. Easily learned and perfect for the
Christmas season.
