GENERAL ANTHEMS / LITURGICAL ANTHEMS
You Are My Refuge—Michael John Trotta.
This stunningly expressive work was
commissioned by a number of high school
choir programs forced to cancel concerts
due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Inspiring and
reflective, the rich harmonies capture both
a sense of poignancy and hope. An optional
descant soars above the choir, adding a sense
of expansiveness: "Your voice brings hope!"

You Are the One—Thomas Keesecker.
Thomas Keesecker is a master at crafting
tuneful melodies. Here he pairs a new
melody with a Herb Brokering text to create
a graceful and approachable anthem. The text
lists numerous attributes of God's expansive
character, making this anthem useful
throughout the year. Consider programming
it during communion, for creation-themed
worship, or Holy Trinity Sunday.

You Do Not Walk Alone—Elaine Hagenberg.
"May you always remember when the
shadows fall, you do not walk alone." This
ethereal setting of a traditional Irish blessing
is scored in a variety of voicings with piano.
Deft strokes of Celtic styling within the melody
weaves throughout the vocal texture. Gradually
building in intensity, it transitions into the final
stanza with a burst of light, aided by a key
change, then slowly draws to a quiet close.

has very little divisi, great vocal ranges and a
supportive piano accompaniment. Impressive
in concert or festival settings. Don't miss it!

piano or harp with optional flute obbligato,
the setting is based on an easily learned
partner song with two lyrical melodies in the
minor mode. A wonderful choice for concerts,

Come to Me, O Weary Traveler—Bob
Moore & Sylvia Dunstan. Sylvia Dunstan's
hymn setting of Matthew 11 is transformed
into a serene hymn anthem. The opening
unison women's voices lead to two-part mixed
voices that, in turn, become a rich four-part
harmonic texture. A key change lifts to the final
verse, which adds a descant, before a quiet
close: "Rest in me. Take my yoke. Do not fear.
Come to me."

Come, My Way, My Truth, My Life—
Thomas Keesecker. George Herbert's timeless
text is reimagined in this lovely setting
featuring beautiful choral writing that varies by
stanza: women in the first verse, men in the
second, and all in the third. The flowing piano
accompaniment propels the voices forward as
they build to a warm close: "Such a heart as joys
in love." This is very accessible and rewarding.

Cum Sancto Spiritu—Jose Mauricio
Nunes Garcia/ed. Marques L.A. Garrett
and Alec Schumacker. This piece from
Missa Abreviada, CPM 112, has been
edited for choir with solo quartet and piano
accompaniment. Beginning slowly, the piece
moves into a spirited fugal setting of the
traditional Latin Cum Sancto Spiritu.

Divine Encounter: I. The Invitation—Craig
Courtney. The first movement of the trilogy
Divine Encounter is a song in which God
invites us to receive His bounty. The first verse
of Isaiah 55 is expressed as a celebration
rather than the meditative, lyric manner found
in most settings. In contrast, the setting of the
sixth verse is regal, earnest, and authoritative;
the architecture of the movement is built upon
the contrast between these two styles.
