Rays of Hope—Sandra Eithun. Throughout
all of life's trials, hope gives us the strength
to rebuild and confidently reinvent our
circumstances. This original piece depicts the
remnants of a storm that has passed, and then
gives way to a bouncy theme that conjures
imagery of dancing light. A thoughtful middle
section reminds the listener that uncluttered
days are never a given or soon forgotten.
Hope does return with the theme to round
out the ending of the piece. Techniques such
as singing bell, suspended bells with mallets,
thumb damp, and LV are incorporated. The
texture of the piece is further enhanced by the
addition of chime tree, ocean drum and/or rain
sticks, and optional handchimes, all combining
to add interest.

Reflection on Stuttgart—attr. Christian F.
Witt/arr. Karen Lakey Buckwalter. The tune
STUTTGART may be found in hymnals with a
variety of titles including Come, Thou Long
Expected Jesus and Child of Blessing, Child
of Promise. The familiar hymn tune is artfully
arranged for handbells with piano and flute,
which gives support to less experienced
handbell ringers. The interplace between the
three instruments creates a thoughtful and
meditative setting.

arr. Michael Glasgow. A bluegrass toe-
tapper! Commissioned for the 2020 Handbell
Musicians of America Area 5 Spring Festival
in Louisville, Kentucky, this piece starts open
and stately before launching with rhythmic
energy into a fun concert piece with country
style. It brilliantly pairs the Freeman Lewis

BOURBON (I Take My Refuge in
the Lord) with a Daniel Teasley hymn,
I'VE
FOUND A REFUGE.
Marts, mallets, plucks, ring-
touches and more are sure to excite your
concert audiences and congregations alike.

Remembering—John A. Behnke. An original
piece to remember those who have passed
away due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this
reflective piece has minimal bell changes and
no sharing of bells. The music begins with
a tolling bell, then a melody emerges which
seeks to express the significance of each life
lived, including their struggle with this virus.

Restored—Sandra Eithun. Referencing the
psalmist's phrase "He restores my soul,"
this original piece offers the listener a sense
of calm in spite of life's turbulent times. The
opening section of the piece is contemplative
and exposed. An uplifting theme is then
introduced and evolves into a quiet and
brooding middle section. To remind us of
the title, there is a modulation leading into a
powerful restatement of the initial theme. This
piece offers an enormous opportunity to work
on expression and dynamic variance and is
perfect for church, concert, or festival venues.

Riposo—Linda Scholes. This tender original
tune is a beautiful musical statement. The
simple, lyrical melody is given delicate
underscoring with lush chords, and the melody
moves throughout the ensemble, giving all
ringers a chance to shine. The energy builds to
a bold final verse underscored by full, malleted
chords in the bass. A very approachable
musical statement for church or concert use.

Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us—arr.
Lloyd Larson. This arrangement is an idyllic
choice for use in worship. Combining the
Bach chorale Sheep May Safely Graze with the
hymn tune
BRADBURY, it masterfully alternates
between the two tunes, casting them both in a
new light. A final bold setting of the hymn tune
leads the piece back once more to a calm,
serene ending.

Shall We Gather at the River—arr. Ron
Mallory. This fresh and innovative setting of the
hymn tune
HANSON PLACE begins with singing
bell, melody on the chimes, and malleted treble
air bells. The melody then moves between
bells and handchimes (F5-C6) with a transition
to a majestic final verse before closing with
downward quartal harmonies that incorporate
echoes and LV. A quiet, lovely arrangement
sure to be a favorite for years to come.

The Sower/Johnny Appleseed—Kathleen
Wissinger. Useful for both school and church,
this lively, original composition depicts
someone taking a lighthearted walk, scattering
seeds along the way. Mallets and thumb
damps set the tone for this airy and optimistic
piece. While in 4/4 meter, a few easy 5/4 and
6/4 measures (allowing time for the walker to
go around a rock) make this a good learning
piece to introduce mixed meter. The optional
woodblock/tic-toc block adds even more
spunk. Fun and festive!

Strong to Save—arr. Kerry Johnston. This rich
setting of Eternal Father, Strong to Save for bells
and organ is given extra depth and aural interest
with the addition of optional trumpet, trombone,
and/or timpani. A full choral verse gives way to
a verse accompanied by eighth-note chords and
arpeggios in the bells before leading into a more
subdued treatment of the theme. A final bold
verse brings the piece to a satisfying conclusion.
