ADVENT LITURGICAL / CHRISTMAS LITURGICAL
Adult Liturgical
Advent Anthems
Creator of the Stars of Night—Andrew
Bruhn. Original music provides a fresh and
tuneful setting of the familiar advent hymn text.
The lyrical melody pairs beautifully with the text
in this very accessible anthem.

The Day of the Lord—Justin Wedgewood/
arr. Scot Crandal. This Advent song looks
simultaneously toward the celebration of
the birth of the infant Jesus and the second
coming of the risen Christ. Accompanied by
keyboard, guitar, and solo instrument, the
piece is composed in 3/8 and flows smoothly
with one beat per bar. Musically evoking an
ancient past, it features drone-like open fifths
at the beginning and end. It also uses melodic
raised sixths and the minor dominant at
cadential points, giving the piece an effective
modal (Dorian) tinge.

In Deepest Night Above the Earth—M.D.
Ridge/arr. Steven Ottomanyi. Text and music
intertwine in this effective Christmas piece
that pairs the angels' call to the shepherds to
go see the newborn King with the similar call
we still experience two thousand years later.
The original hymn tune evokes the ancient
past of those shepherds through its scoring
for harp (or piano imitating a harp) and its use
of modality, representing the darker elements
of the Christmas story. Optional cello. A hymn
version is also included when assembly
singing is desired.

Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence—Chad
Fothergill. A really beautiful introduction
establishes the tone for this glorious
congregation/choir setting, which was the
highlight of the 2019 Christmas at Duke
Chapel program. Accompanied by organ
and strings, verses one and four are unison,
verse two is SATB a cappella, and verse three
suggests the congregation in canon. It closes
with a brilliant, thrilling finish.

The Long-Expected Hour—arr. Howard
Helvey. Howard Helvey's impeccable attention
to voice leading and exquisite sense of style
are on full display in this a cappella advent
anthem that sets Thomas Campbell's text to
an early American ballad tune.

Magnificat anima mea—Taylor Scott
Davis. This energetic opening movement of
a larger setting of the Magnificat certainly
stands on its own. Brilliant choral writing can
be accompanied by full orchestra, chamber
orchestra, or organ and harp (piano) with
optional percussion. Divisi writing creates rich
sonorities, and careful Latin text declamation
is achieved through meter changes and lively
rhythmic interplay. An exciting and highly
recommended work.

My Soul Rejoices—Sarah Hart. This
contemporary setting of the Magnificat allows
us the opportunity to echo Mary's words
of praise to God. Its foursquare rhythms
punctuated by easy syncopations will be easily
learned by the assembly. It is scored for three-
part choir and features simple but effective
accompaniment parts for piano, guitar, and
solo instrument in C. It is especially appropriate
for Advent but could be effectively used as a
song of praise throughout the year.

O Come, Emmanuel—Elaine Hagenberg.
"Colorful" is the best word to describe this
original setting of the traditional Advent text,
scored for choir, piano and cello. Marked
"mysterioso" in triple meter, it is such a creative
interpretation - the effect in performance is
truly extraordinary! Highly recommended!

opening for the Advent season. Each verse,
including one for a cappella voices, builds
toward a climactic ending. This is good enough
to become an annual tradition in your church.

this setting of
BEREDEN VAG FOR HERRAN is
accompanied by piano four hands. Unison
choral writing predominates the first and
third verses, while homophonic vocals add
contrast and depth in the middle verse, further
distinguished by some rhythmic and harmonic
alterations. The joyful final tag will make a nice
advent worship benediction.

German carol Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming
(ES

flexible performance: organ accompaniment
alone, organ with handbells, and the
possible addition of either a C instrument or
a solo voice. The hushed and beautiful mood
throughout will be perfect for Christmas Eve or
