The Lake Isle of Innisfree—Penny Rodriguez.
Inspired by the memories of childhood summers
spent in the Irish countryside, Yeats' poem
provides a whimsical backdrop to this original
concert work. With a gentle, lilting folk-song
feeling, this piece includes proven part-singing
strategies. The melody appears in unison, canon,
with a countermelody, and then finally in full
three-part harmony.

The Lake Isle—Ola Gjeilo. This refreshing work
employs a folk-like sound to capture W.B. Yeats'
wonderfully descriptive words from The Lake
Isle of Innisfree. The movement in the piano, the
strumming of the guitar, and the richness of the
strings work together with the voices to create the
imagery of a long and pleasant journey.

Last Kind Words—Paul John Rudoi. An exciting
concert work for tenor-bass choirs, this piece is
conceived with driving, chant-like a cappella choral
lines accompanied by notated body percussion and
parts for shaker and drum(s). The text, from poet
Rabindranath Tagore's own English translation
of his Gitanjali, celebrates life's most meaningful
moments such as closing a chapter with hearts
full and excitement for the future. A unique and
powerful work!

Lead with Love—Melanie DeMore. Written in
answer to a call for connection in troubled times,
this song is about persistence, community, and
moving ahead. "One foot in front of the other" is
a metaphor for determination and forward motion.
The composer speaks of "love warriors" like Martin
Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa,
and Gandhi - all of whom started their movements
out of love for their people, not out of hatred of
someone else.

Robert Bode's text infuses this original song with
a message of music advocacy and appreciation.
The rhythmic piano accompaniment sets up a nice
groove in the compound meter for the choral parts
to stretch against with duples and triples. This is a
special piece that will be a great signature song for
your choir, or can be used as a dramatic way to
open or close your concert. Wonderful!

Life and Death—Samuel Coleridge-Taylor/arr.
Kyle B. Wooten. First conceived as a solo art song
by English composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, here
the arranger has left the soaring melody intact as
well as the piano accompaniment. Often called
"Black Mahler," this music encourages a history
lesson, a music lesson, and brings into focus why
Coleridge-Taylor has been hailed a cultural hero by
African Americans.

A Life Well Lived—Braeden Ayres. Based on the
Edgar Albert Guest poem Compensation, the text
of this original concert work asks us to consider
what we would like to be able to say about our
lives when we look back in our old age. The melody
has a familiar folk song feel, and the addition of
a pennywhistle or flute enhances the warm,
comfortable tone of the piece.

songwriting workshop during the 2020 pandemic,
the young participants settled on a text that calls
for hope and light at the end of the tunnel. Their
positive attitude led to the creation of an upbeat
syncopated setting with lyrics that center on the
future and achieving it together. Fun to sing and

The Light That Will Lead You Home—Stuart
Chapman Hill. This piece, based on an original text,

gospel style found in the keyboard keeps the piece
lively and accentuates the message that "every now
and then when the darkness falls, I can be the light
that will lead you home."

The Lighthouse—Andy Beck. The title of this
piece, though it never actually appears in the lyrics,
provides an overarching metaphor for the text.
The ebb and flow of the piano accompaniment
represents a turbulent sea, while the text presents
themes of strength, guidance, and living by example
in this inspirational choral. Superb voice leading,
along with sweeping musicality and phrasing, make
the warm harmonic twists and turns accessible for
any choir. Expressive and elevating!
