Music in the Air—arr. Ryan Murphy. "Over my
head I hear music in the air, there must be a God
somewhere." The traditional spiritual is a mix of
hopeful lyrics about the future, despite our current
afflictions. This setting brings an exciting new life
to the traditional melody with an active piano part
that moves the piece from lyrical to a syncopated
gospel feel without breaking tempo or style. The
choral parts employ traditional harmonies and some
divisi in the final section to create a full-throated
celebration of life.

The Music of Living—Dan Forrest. This powerful
and inspirational piece with a dynamic piano
accompaniment was composed for a performance
at the 2011 Texas Music Educators Association
Convention. This exuberant work will challenge
your choir, but it will be worth the work in the end.
Optional full score with violin, horn, timpani, and
percussion is available and while it is scored for
TTBB voices, it can be used with the SATB version.

My Feet Are Tired, but My Soul Is Resting—
Francis Smith Thomas/arr. Shawn Kirchner. This
song by Francis Smith Thomas, a close friend of
the Martin Luther King, Jr. family, was inspired
by the words of a woman who participated in the
Montgomery bus boycott, a pivotal event in the
civil rights movement. This powerful hymn-like
arrangement opens with a soprano solo written
in honor of Coretta Scott King, who premiered the
piece as a soprano solo.

My King Is Comin' Soon—Kyle Pederson. This
genre-bending piece blends elements of rock,
gospel, spiritual, and the spoken word. Useful
for the Advent season or school concert anytime,
the text invites chorus and listener to imagine a
world of mercy, justice, peace, and compassion.
Commissioned by the Wartburg Choir and Dr. Lee
Nelson, it was premiered at Christmas at Wartburg
in 2019.

My Lord, What a Morning—arr. Victor C.
Johnson. Here's a beloved American spiritual,
sensitively prepared for concert or service use.
The familiar strophic melody and expressive
tempo markings stretch on each phrase and
suggest more motion when the text dictates. A
lovely piano accompaniment does not double but
rather complements the harmonic structure while
remaining supportive.

James L. Stevens. This traditional hymn is one of
the signature songs of Brigham Young University's
a cappella group BYU Vocal Point. Adapted to be a

A New Horizon—Greg Gilpin. "Everything will
be alright... 'cause I can see a new horizon on a
brand-new day." This gospel-style original piece
can really bring a positive vibe as a closing piece
in your concert or year-end ceremony. A solo voice
becomes a duet before all the singers join in and
grow with layered harmonies and ascending key
changes. Add a drummer or the accompaniment
track to really kick it up a notch!

ed. Dan Forrest. This striking adaptation from
scripture foretells a future free from tears, hatred,
and injustice and provides a vision of a renewed
and redeemed earth: "A New Jerusalem arise, a
new creation come alive, into the dawning after
dark, arise!" A combination of varied musical
influences is skillfully woven together for choir,
piano, and optional instruments including cello,

From two very important composers of our time,
the lyrics in this monumental work challenge ideas
of racism and discrimination, while the music
combines jazz and traditional choral techniques. No

color can come between us.

Nox—Elaine Hagenberg. The dramatic third
movement from "Illuminare" opens with the
traditional Kyrie text in a somber, forebodingly
ominous manner before exploding into a blast of
fury as the Latin text turns to night and darkness.
Accented rhythms and mixed meter contribute to
the feeling of chaos, and the dramatic dynamic
range and rhythmic intensity increase to a
glorious conclusion.
