MULTICULTURAL & WORLD MUSIC
Tshotsholoza—arr. Jeffery L. Ames. This
rousing arrangement of the popular South African
freedom song has become a standard in the choral
repertoire. With call-and-response vocals, Xhosa
text, and rhythmic percussion accompaniment, it
transports the listener to South Africa, where the
song is often referred to as the unofficial anthem
of the country. It was used in the soundtrack of the
Oscar-nominated movie "Invictus," and served as
South Africa's battle call at the 2010 World Cup.
This is essential multicultural programming!

Tuba—arr. Michael Barrett. This South African song
is believed to have originated during the difficult
Apartheid years and performed as a peaceful protest
song. Tuba is translated as "a dove," and the call
and response texture makes reference to the story
of Noah and the dove that brought an olive branch
after the great flood to signify that the worst is over.
The baritone soloist presents the initial melody while
the choir builds the harmonic structure in rhythmic
excitement. Improvised percussion and vocal
ululation are encouraged!

Tue, Tue—arr. Ruth Morris Gray. Vocal ostinatos
join one by one in the opening of this rhythmic
arrangement of an authentic Ghanaian folk song.
Unison lines, block triads, and a reset of the dynamics
in the choral bridge are a blast. Repeated sections
make for quick learning and easy memorization.
Plenty of teaching moments here, along with a
nice pulse and groove that choirs will enjoy. A
pronunciation guide is included, and choreography
is available on the When We Sing! DVD.

Tumekuja Kuimba—Lynn Zettlemoyer. This
vibrant, percussive original a cappella work uses
both Swahili and English text to create a dynamic

or processional. The theme of "coming together
to sing" allows for a wealth of programming
opportunities. The piece is filled with musical
learning using language, rhythm, independent
singing, and harmonic expression. A very cool riff,
lots of repetition, and simple ranges make it a joy to

Emerging Treble Choir—arr. Christi Jones. Two
folk songs, one Italian and one Tuscan, provide a
wonderful opportunity to shape vowels and unify
the choir's sound. Each piece begins in unison and
gradually adds voice parts for a gentle introduction
to part singing. This set will be particularly helpful
at the beginning of the year when your ensemble is

better together. Simple call and response, unison
melodies, chant/rap solos in the middle section,
and full harmony for the final repetition make this
easy to learn and thrilling to perform. Add the

setting of the Turkish folk song utilizes repetition so
that the short Turkish text, once learned, becomes
easier with each repetition of the chorus. The tempo
increases as the arrangement builds, creating a
whirling and exciting effect. Incorporate the optional
oboe, finger cymbals, tambourine, and dumbek for
added authenticity. A pronunciation guide and

high-energy piece for a cappella treble choir with
optional body percussion and spoons is fun to sing
and dynamic to perform. Written in the style of an
Acadian folk song, the words of Vichten are made
up entirely of nonsense syllables, similar to Scottish
"mouth music" where the voices are intended to
mimic instruments.

this! It's a popular folk song from Haiti about a
country in change. Wangol is a voodoo spirit and

We Will—Jim Papoulis. Each time "chiku ah"
(chikoo ah) is sung it should be in a whispered
voice, with intensity. "Si mama, wototo" (stand
tall, children) is the response in Swahili. This
compelling piece uses both English and Swahili to
send the message that we must send the best part
of ourselves into the future through our children.
"We'll move on, we'll grow stronger, we will sing
another song, we will dream of a promise that will
bring a brighter day..."
