CHRISTMAS & HOLIDAY medium to advanced
Jingle Bells—arr. Sammy Nestico. Sammy
Nestico, one of the most important figures in the
evolution of the big band sound, has arranged
this holiday classic for the Count Basie Orchestra
recording A Very Swingin' Basie Christmas. This
great swing chart exemplifies the timeless Basie/
Nestico tradition and is a must-have for any holiday
performance or gig. Additionally, improvised solo
space is provided for trumpet 2. This is one you
won't want to miss!

Jingle Freakin' Bells—Matthew Montgomery.
Buckle your seat belts! This is a high-octane, punk-
rock rendition of a Christmas classic. Your guitar
player can bring out all his pedals and your tenor
sax soloist can go crazy. Jingle Bells is the featured
melody, but see if you can find all the other hidden
gems in Jingle Freakin' Bells.

Joy to the World—arr. Rich DeRosa. Rich DeRosa
once again provides us with his clever take on one
of the most popular Christmas carols, Joy to the
World. As arranged for the WDR Big Band, DeRosa
sets this traditional tune in a zydeco feel that
provides an entertaining journey from beginning to
end. Focusing entirely on the ensemble, there is no
improvisation in this chart. Rather, DeRosa builds
and builds the ensemble through creative rhythms,
harmonies, key changes, and grooves. This will be
an absolute crowd favorite!

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!—Jule
Styne/arr. Gordon Goodwin. In the style of Basie
and Hefti, this Gordon Goodwin adaptation of the
wonderful holiday classic is set in a medium swing
style. Not a drum showcase, but the drummer has
plenty of solo space beginning on brushes, then to
sticks as the intensity rises. There is a flute part on
second alto (can be omitted) and a percussion part
for vibes. The optional solo space is for alto, tenor,
trumpet, trombone, and the lead trumpet range is
to written high E. A great sax section soli rounds out
this excellent chart. This one is so nice, you'll want
to play it year 'round! Highly recommended!

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!—Jule
Styne/arr. Alan Baylock. This swinging holiday
arrangement is a slightly easier version of the
chart that Alan Baylock did for the USAF Airmen
of Note. It features the saxes in a "four brothers"
setting with written solo space provided for each
of the five saxes if desired. The lead trumpet range
is to written B above the staff and there are parts
included for optional expanded instrumentations.
Here's a Christmas chart with substance!

The Little Drummer Boy—arr. Rob Holmes.
Here's a very clever arrangement of this holiday
gem! It's a drum set on brushes feature at
around 172 bpm in the style of Hefti's Cute with
a written or ad lib trumpet 2 solo. There's tons of
nice ensemble work and a lead trumpet range up
to written A above the staff. A nice sax soli and a
unison interlude complete this Christmas package!

Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming—arr. Bob
Curnow. With a nod to the wonderful Dave Maddux
arrangement written for the vocal group First Call,
Bob Curnow has created a gorgeous version for big
band. Every jazz group needs Christmas charts to
perform, and this one is beautiful in its simplicity
and overall effect. It begins quietly in a jazz chorale
style and gradually builds to a dramatic climax
followed by a sonorous ending. There are no
solos. Turn off the house lights, put the spotlight on
your band, and you will be able to hear a pin drop
when you finish this beautiful arrangement. Very
highly recommended!

(Not So) Silent Night—arr. Mike Collins-Dowden.
A not so silent night? You bet! This half-time swing/
funk arrangement takes Silent Night and gives the
familiar tune a funky twist. With its infectious groove,
killer harmonies, and dynamic twists and turns, this
one will be a favorite. Be sure to check out the horns-
only call-and-response section and the optional parts
that are included for expanded instrumentation. The
solo section features some improvised solos for any
instrument, and there is a suggested scale sheet in
every part to help soloists be successful. It will be a
(Not So) Silent Night at your holiday concert!

The Nutcracker Suite—arr. Strayhorn &
Ellington/ed. Lindberg. This authentic edition of
Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite," as arranged in
1960 by Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington, was
assembled from the original manuscripts held in the
Strayhorn Repository and the Ellington Collection of
the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of
American History. For purposes of accuracy, the
manuscripts were cross-checked carefully with the
original Duke Ellington Orchestra recording. Edited
by Jeff Lindberg, this nine-movement suite is part
of the Jazz Legend Series.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer—Johnny
Marks/arr. Chris Sharp. Take your band on a tour
of musical styles as everyone's favorite Christmas
song gets a special treatment by arranger Chris
Sharp. Opening with a slow trumpet solo a la Harry
James, it soon breaks into an up-tempo swing that
will have everyone's toes tappin'! Then, it goes
alternating through rock, swing, and salsa styles
before it finally makes a big, bluesy, big-band
finish. Highly recommended!

Tis the Season to Be Funky—arr. Doug Beach
& George Shutack. Bring the holidays on in a funky
fashion with this medley of Christmas classics!
The funky groove will have everyone tapping their
feet or even dancing in the aisles! Familiar tunes,
solid voicings, and written or improvised solo
space all add up to a medley that will be the hit
of your holiday program. Everything desired in an
accessible holiday chart!

We Wish You a Merry Christmas—arr. Rich
Woolworth. This chart begins with a simple unison
opening statement giving way to a grandiose
chorale setting before settling into an accessible
Basie-style swing groove. There's a tenor solo, a
quick restatement of the melody, and suddenly it
goes to an up-tempo, double-time jazz feel. As
quickly as it began, it returns to the chorale setting
for a big finish. Wish your audiences a merry
Christmas with this chart that will be the perfect
holiday concert closer!

What Child Is This?—arr. Rich DeRosa. Rich
DeRosa continues to amaze with his creative
arrangements of traditional Christmas songs.
This time, he has incorporated the legendary
Wayne Shorter classic Footprints into this
Christmas favorite and the result is nothing short
of spectacular! There are written melody solos
for both alto saxophone and trombone with an
extended improvised alto sax solo that soars to a
climatic finish. Doubles include flute for tenor sax
1 and flugelhorns for trumpets. Real jazz for your
holiday performances!

Winter Wonderland—arr. Jack Cooper. This one
is a creative and swinging chart on a wonderful
