River of Life—Steven Reineke. We urge you to
look at this important work! This composer is the
resident composer for the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra
and we feel that this is an incredible composition...
the highs, the lows, the development, the scoring,
the transitions, the themes...all point to a piece that
must be given a place in the band repertoire. Best
of all, is that this work will appeal on several levels,
the melodies and rhythms immediately grab you,
but on a deeper level, the composer's skill is quite
evident. Our highest recommendations!

Riverside Overture—Robert Sheldon. This
spirited overture features tuneful and rhythmic
melodies contrasted with some musically poignant
moments of lyrical expression. The bright and bold
nature of the music is overflowing with a distinct
and appealing vibrant personality - a great way to
open any concert program!

Rocket Surgery—Chris Campbell. Written for
smaller bands with limited instrumentation that
are looking for more challenging compositions,
this complex composition will develop musicians'
counting and rhythmic precision skills while also
working on cut time and tonguing. This unique
choice will entertain performers and audiences
alike with its tongue-in-cheek approach.

Rocky Neck—Roger Cichy. This piece is part
of a three-movement work titled Beachscapes.
Its flowing melody paints a vivid image of waves
approaching the shore while swells and impacts
depict them crashing majestically on the rocks.
An excellent opportunity to showcase your band's
musicianship and tone.

Rondo for Tuba and Band—arr. Andrew Glover.
This fine arrangement captures the playfulness
and somewhat mischievous spirit of the original
work. Feature your star tuba, bassoon, or bass
clarinet player!

The Rumor of a Secret King—John Mackey.
The atmosphere of courtly intrigue and suspense is
created from the very beginning with soft murmuring
whispers that introduce the unfolding drama.
Ripples of sound grow and spread, rising in intensity
as the import of a looming pronouncement finally
erupts in a dazzling display of musical ferocity.

Sahara—Patrick Glenn Harper. This exciting
programmatic work paints a picture of a fantastical
desert crossing in three contrasting sections: a
caravan crossing the desert; a visit to a palace
in a mystical oasis; and the caravan outrunning
a sandstorm. With interesting lines for every
instrument, an extensive percussion section,
and varied tempos and rhythmic challenges,
this composition will challenge and reward your
performers' efforts while entertaining audiences. A
great concert or contest choice.
11399549 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . .85.00
Scramble—Todd Stalter. A tumultuous concert
opener or closer intended to depict two characteristics
of the title, the frantic collecting of things together in
a disorderly way, and darting about quickly with a
sense of urgency. Once the theme is presented the
fun really starts! The action revs up as the musical
"parts" are separated and combined in unique and
haphazard combinations, all at break-neck speed
that will leave everyone breathless!

Sea Songs—Ralph Vaughan Williams. One of
the simpler works by Vaughan Williams for band,
this setting of English sea songs was originally
written in 1924. The scoring is direct and
straightforward, resulting in a most rewarding yet
highly playable work.

The Seal Lullaby—Eric Whitacre. This loving and
dreamlike work captures the undulating rhythm of
a mother rocking her child to sleep. The piece was
inspired by the classic Rudyard Kipling poem White
Seal. Magical!

The Seal Lullaby—Eric Whitacre/arr. Robert
J. Ambrose. This is a flexible arrangement of a
beloved work by both band and choir directors
alike. Arranged with maximum flexibility in mind,
the work can be performed by any of the following
ensembles: concert band (with as few as six wind
players), brass ensemble, clarinet choir, saxophone
choir, or woodwind choir.

Second Suite in F—Holst/arr. Longfield. In this
adaptation of the landmark work for band, the
extreme ranges have been adjusted for young
players, the instrumentation has been updated to
that of the contemporary concert band and liberal
cues have been added, particularly for oboe,
bassoon and horn. The integrity of the original is
completely intact and will serve as a wonderful
experience for young bands.

Seconds—Michael J. Miller. This work, dedicated
to victims of gun violence, is a somber and
introspective work. It explores the harmonic and
melodic effects of seconds. Highly emotional,
this work will stretch the expressiveness of your
musicians. A wonderful choice for a lyrical selection
on your next program.

Sedona—Steven Reineke. Don't miss this
distinctive composition! Having has had several
wonderful pieces published already, this successful
composer has captured in musical ideas the natural
landscape of mountains and wide open spaces,
and uses them to paint a musical canvas that is
at once bold, entertaining, and filled with life. A
short, memorable theme runs throughout the work,
showing up in a delicate flute solo, an intricate
woodwind fugue, a warm trombone solo, and a
bold, triadic trumpet statement that will pick you
up right out of your seat. A marvelous piece that we
highly recommend to all bands!

Serenity—Ola Gjeilo/trans. J. Eric Wilson.
Beautifully arranged by J. Eric Wilson along with
the composer, this version for wind band maintains
all the wonder and magic of the original choral
work. The opening is ethereal and somber, with
sustained chords in clarinets and bowed percussion
supporting a delicate oboe solo. The middle section
shifts the principal modality from minor to major,
and the layering orchestration and rising tessitura
creates a tremendous rush of energy that leads to
a triumphant climax. The closing section returns
to the timbre of the opening, but now painted with
hopefulness and healing.

Seventeen Come Sunday—Ralph Vaughan
Williams/arr. Ed Huckeby. The famous march from
Ralph Vaughan Williams' iconic "Folk Song Suite"
has been masterfully arranged, allowing bands with
limited instrumentation to enjoy the uniqueness of
this classic work. Every original melodic line, chord,
and nuance is included so it can be performed in its
original style, even by ensembles with very limited
instrumentation. This is a must-have for any band
library. A true band standard!

Shepherd's Hey—Percy Grainger/arr. Rogers.
This is a most welcome publication! This well
known piece has long been available in an edition
with only Grainger's compressed score. This newly
edited set of parts comes with a full score that
directors will really appreciate. As for the music
itself, let us just say that this delightful piece is such
a major part of the foundation of the wind repertoire
that it should be in every library!

Short Ride in a Fast Machine—John Adams/
arr. Saucedo. Composed in 1986, this fast-paced
and dynamic work took the symphonic world by
storm.Available here in a playable setting for school
ensembles, Richard Saucedo transposed the key
down a third from the original and skillfully adapted
some of the more complicated rhythmic patterns
without sacrificing any of the excitement and drive.A
wonderful introduction to "minimalist" music and one
of America's treasured contemporary composers.
10023051 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . .85.00
Shortcut Home—Dana Wilson. Shortcut Home
is a rousing fanfare that features each section of
the ensemble. With exciting drive and jazz-based
interludes, the piece cascades towards its home
of C-major. Shortcut Home is a perfect attention-
grabber for the opening or close of a concert. (2:55)

Slava!—Leonard Bernstein/arr. Robert Longfield.
The transcription of this exuberant overture has
become a staple of band repertoire and is a
proven programming favorite. Constructed using
two contrasting themes that combine near the
end, this careful adaptation puts it at a more
approachable grade level yet still retains the energy
and authenticity of the original.
