Your beginning orchestra will love this fun programmatic work. Violins and violas play tense staccato ostinatos while the cellos and bass play an ominous melody below before the upper strings take the melody with the low strings sawing heaving eighth notes. Throw in some great sound effects and a few whirly tubes and you have a hit that the audience and musicians won't be able to get enough of! 11392928 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . .45.00 11392929 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . .6.00 Anchored—Todd Parrish. A fun piece for young players that reinforces the practice of leaving fingers down, "anchored" to the fingerboard. With a nautical flavor, the piece explores staccato and legato articulation along with striking dynamic contrast. Low second-finger patterns only occur in the first violin part, and fourth finger use is encouraged for all upper strings. The set includes Viola parts in treble clef and Violin 2 parts in alto clef for ensemble flexibility. In every great story there is always an antagonist, the character whose opposing force is central to the success of the story. This concept has been applied to music in this selection for string orchestra. The piece is aggressive and at times purposely antagonizing. Designed with the youngest of players in mind, it works on simple repeated eighth-note patterns as the foundation for the melodic material.Interesting parts are provided for all instruments, and everyone gets to play the melody.Impressive! 10093742 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . .45.00 10093743 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . .6.50 Antelope Freeway—Steven L. The lofty flight of the stately eagle is heard in this original work for developing string orchestra. "Aquila" is Latin for eagle;this majestic name was also given to a northern constellation that extends across the celestial equator. Set in B minor, the theme is developed first in violins accompanied by a staccato ostinato, alternating with legato slurred patterns. Students will encounter easy dotted quarter rhythms, two-note slurs, and a variety of dynamics in this excellent concert selection. 11401184 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . .55.00 11401185 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . .8.50 Arco Polo for Multi-Level Orchestra—Ingrid Koller. This engaging piece for string orchestra is appropriate for any time of the year but is especially fun for a summer orchestra concert. Arco Polo is a musical depiction of the well-known swimming-pool game Marco Polo. The piece begins tutti pizzicato, but then the instruments "call out" to each other using their bows. This is a multilevel piece which makes it a practical choice for an orchestra with students at varying skill levels. It can stand alone as a Level 1.5 piece, but with the addition of the advanced violin, viola, and cello parts it becomes even more challenging and fun. For yet another layer of fun, there is an optional improvisational section where students are randomly (perhaps secretly) selected to be the "caller" and the rest of the orchestra answers. As an extra surprise for the orchestra and audience, an audience member can be cued to literally call out to the orchestra. 11399763 Multi-Level Orchestra . . . . . . .40.00 11399764 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . .7.00 Artifacts—Kathryn Griesinger. A skill-building concert selection! 11401186 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . .53.00 11401187 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . .7.50 Atlantis—Todd Parrish. Using only the notes and rhythms learned in the first year of study, this work is very accessible to beginning and intermediate students. The minor-key feel of this work will motivate students from the first rehearsal to the final performance. Violin 2 and viola are doubled throughout, as are cello and bass. 11349249 String Orchestra . . . . . . . . . . .48.00 11349266 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . .7.00 Attack of the Walking Basses—Bob Phillips.
