Kentucky Mountain Hoedown—arr. Mekel
Rogers. A lively folk dance written for young
orchestra musicians. The main theme is based
on the eastern Kentucky folk tune Old Joe Clark, a
song about a 19th-century Kentucky mountaineer.
The piece should be played with energy in a lively
dance style throughout. An optional woodblock part
is included to evoke the sound of clog dancing.

La Mariposa—Lorrie Baum. La Mariposa,
or "The Butterfly" in English, gives students
exposure to Latin music in the form of the
mambo, a syncopated style of music and dance
that originated in Cuba in the early 1900s.
Alternating between D major and D minor,
the melodic material in La Mariposa is evenly
distributed between the high and low strings.
The easy optional percussion parts add great
dimension to the Latin feel of this piece.

Butterflies" is the translation of the title of this Latin-
