LITURGICAL LENT & HOLY WEEK ANTHEMS
Liturgical Lent &
Holy Week Anthems
Ah, Holy Jesus—Daniel Ficarri. Based on
the familiar German hymn HERLIEBSER JESU, this
unaccompanied motet offers a sublime musical
experience for congregations and audiences
alike during the season of Lent. Anchored
by a homophonic four-part middle, the piece
alternates between a soloist or unison section
and imitative settings of the text.

Ave Verum Corpus—arr. William Bausano.
This is a brief but well-crafted a cappella SATB
choral setting in modern musical notation of
the well-known Gregorian chant. Sung in Latin,
it is ideal for Eucharistic adoration or for any
Eucharistic celebration, in particular, the Feast
of Corpus Christi. Moving!

Behold the Lamb of God—John A. Behnke.
This Baroque-like anthem incorporates
accessible contrapuntal technique, making
it satisfying for singer and listener alike. With
a voicing for smaller ensembles, use for Lent
or communion.

Come and Seek the Ways of Wisdom—
Thomas Paulson. The melody of this
accessible setting of a hymn from All Creation
Sings is sweeping and lyrical and the baritone
harmony is well-suited for both bass and tenor
voice. The Ruth Duck texts highlights the need
to seek truth and work toward justice. The flute
score is included in the anthem.

Come to Aid Your Servant (Tuis Famulis
Subveni from "Te Deum")—Michael
John Trotta. This humble prayer is simply
and beautifully set for a cappella choir
and may be performed in Latin or English.
Conservative vocal ranges in each part make
this approachable, and carefully placed
cluster harmonies bring a stunning modern
texture that can lead to a moment of hushed
reverence in Lenten services.

Dies Irae (from "Requiem")—Michael
John Trotta. Pulsating rhythmic ostinatos,
cluster harmonies, and soaring soprano lines
are all present in this exciting a cappella
concert work, possessing all the elements
you'd expect from the composer of Veni, Veni
Emmanuel. Based on the 13th-century Dies
Irae chant, the exciting minor texture contrasts
driving rhythms and beautiful legato singing
while still remaining accessible. A perfect way
to showcase your choir as a concert opener,
closer, or for festival use.

Forty Days and Forty Nights—Martin
Herbst, Antonio Vivaldi & J.S. Bach/arr. Chaz
Bowers. This setting for use during Lent uses
J.S. Bach's organ arrangement of Vivaldi's
Concerto for Two Violins with Bach's own
harmonization of the tune
HEINLEIN, also
referred to as
AUS DER TIEFE ("Out of the
Depths"). The middle stanzas use traditional
and modern harmonies, while the final
stanza combines elements of the Vivaldi/
Bach concerto with the Bach hymn tune
harmonization. Organ accompaniment with
optional flute, oboe, and cello.

God So Loved the World (from "The
Crucifixion")—John Stainer. Stainer's
enduring work is possibly the most sublime
musical expression of a beloved text from
the Gospel of John. It is a stellar anthem that
deserves a place in every church's choral
library. An excellent choice throughout the
year and particularly for Good Friday services.

Hosanna to the Son/Six Days Before
the Passover—Ken Canedo. This bilingual
pairing (Spanish and English) features two
great pieces specifically for Palm Sunday. The
first piece, for the processional, is sung in a
call-and-response form and utilizes official text
from the Roman Missal. The second piece,
for the simple entrance, employs a refrain
based on the call-and-response of the first
piece, utilizing the text based on the Entrance
Antiphon for Palm Sunday. Both pieces are
scored for SAB choir, keyboard, guitar, and
trumpet in B-flat.

I See His Blood upon the Rose—Shelton
Ridge Love. The grace of Christ as shown in
Creation is the focus of this classic text from
the Irish poet Joseph Mary Plunkett. Set with
sensitivity, each image of nature receives a
special sonic treatment creating a sacred tone
poem of exquisite beauty.

Love's Endeavor, Love's Expense—
Russell Schulz-Widmar. This original music
is beautifully wrapped around the eloquent
poetry of theologian and parish priest William
H. Vanstone (1923-1999). The text speaks of
the costly nature of God's love for the world; it
reminds us that God is not distant but deeply
involved in all our pain and grief. The choral
writing is both moving and accessible. Include
this anthem during Lent and in services of
healing and care.

Lux Aeterna (from "Requiem")—Michael
John Trotta. Incorporating elements of the
ancient and the modern, this stunning a
cappella original presents a lush harmonic
palette with tight cluster harmonies and
a statement of the Requiem chant tune.
The peaceful, luminous quality of the work
contrasts beautifully with the driving and
rhythmic Dies Irae, both extracted from
Trotta's larger work "Requiem." A beautiful
choice for concerts and services.

My Song Is Love Unknown—arr. Benjamin
M. Culli. A cello obligato adds warmth and
depth to this hymn setting of the familiar text
and tune
LOVE UNKNOWN. The choir sings in
unison with the congregation for much of the
anthem, breaking into SATB on stanza five.
The setting ends with a descant that beautifully
floats above the melody. Perfect for Passion
Sunday, Palm Sunday, or Good Friday.

My Song Is Love Unknown—arr. Paul
Monachino. This well-known text and tune for
Good Friday is artfully arranged. Alternating
between stanzas supported by organ
accompaniment and a cappella passages,
this piece is at once beautifully reflective and
powerfully moving.

Now, Even Now, Declare a Fast—arr.
Kevin Hildebrand. A text by Stephen P. Starke
is set to the Welsh tune
LLEF. This easy-to-
learn composition is useful throughout the
Lenten season, especially on Ash Wednesday,
such as during the imposition of ashes. Written
to be flexible, it may be sung by soloists or
two-part choir, with an optional SATB stanza,
and may be modified in length if desired. An
optional part for treble instrument is included.
A moving, thoughtful presentation.

O Jerusalem!—Wayne L. Wold. The
composer wrote the poetry of this dramatic
and stirring anthem while visiting the Holy
Land. The text reflects on Jerusalem's role
in the Passion story and musically captures
the emotion with intense and colorful text
painting. Written in four sections: Palm
Sunday, the Upper Room, Gethsemane, and
Golgotha; each section ends with the phrase,
"O Jerusalem... city of our salvation." While
the score is more advanced with dissonant
and chromatic writing, the recurring motifs
and refrains will aid the learning process.
Consider singing each section as a response to
the corresponding Bible verses as the Passion
narrative is read. Very effective.
11373960 SATB . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.95
O Love of God Incarnate—Justin
Wedgewood. Genevieve Glen's reflection on
the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ
is effectively set to music for choir, keyboard,
guitar, and solo instrument in C. The included
simple hymn version complements the more
involved choral setting which includes an
upward modulation for the third verse.
This piece is especially appropriate during
Holy Week, Triduum, and the following
Easter Season.
11373789 SATB . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.85
Open My Eyes—Michael John Trotta. Based
on Clara Scott's historic hymn text, this anthem
rises as a gentle prayer above an organ
accompaniment. Unison voices gradually
give way to four-part and cluster sonorities.
Deviating from Scott's text, the voices sing
"Metanoia," meaning a transformative spiritual
conversion. A soprano descant soars above
the ethereal close.

Out of the Depths (De Profundis)—Mark
O. Fax. Written by a former director of the
School of Music at Howard University, this
lovely setting of Psalm 130 may be sung a
cappella or lightly accompanied by organ or

services during Lent or Holy Week, or a special
find for your next concert.

Remembrance of You—Sarah Hart & Sarah
Kroger/arr. Rick Modlin. Gentle yet evocative,
this contemporary Communion song reflects
on the Paschal mystery and the meaning of the
Eucharist for the faithful as they are unified in
body and spirit with Christ. The octavo provides
scoring for full SATB choir or a simpler two-
part option, piano and guitar accompaniments,
and a part for flute. Especially relevant for
celebrations of Holy Thursday, Easter Vigil,
and throughout the Easter season, your
assembly will find this singable tune inspiring
and accessible.

Requiem Aeternam—Maurice Ravel/
arr. Rupert Gough. Ravel's popular Pavane
pour une infante defunte arranged for mixed
voices and organ, allows choirs to perform
this beautiful staple of the orchestral repertoire
with meaningful text. The melody is matched
to the words of Requiem aeternam and
features a characterful and active organ part
that underpins the sustained vocal lines.
A worshipful addition to service or concert.

Sing, My Tongue, the Glorious Battle—arr.
John A. Behnke. A hymn concertato based
on a favorite hymn for Lent and Holy Week.
Featuring the tune
FORTUNATUS NEW by Carl
F. Schalk, this setting does not require large
forces and may be sung by choir alone or
choir and congregation. Men and women
have the opportunity to sing their own stanzas
with descants.
11397334 SATB . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.90
To Dust—Karen Marrolli. This lovely,
reflective prayer for mixed voices and piano
is an excellent choice during Lent, particularly
Ash Wednesday. It is beautiful and lyrical
writing that will be meaningful for choir and
congregation alike.

setting of the Maundy Thursday Latin hymn Ubi
Caritas was composed for the royal wedding of
Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton.

Westminster Abbey and Her Majesty's Chapel
Royal, St. James' Palace at Westminster
Abbey on Friday, April 29, 2011. While
challenging, this pieces is a beautiful addition
to the liturgical choral and concert repertoire
due to its colorful chords and sensitivity to the
overall message of the text.

Upon the Cross—Randall DeBruyn &
Genevieve Glen. An excellent anthem for Palm
Sunday or Good Friday. A congregational
hymn version is also included for full assembly
participation. Of medium difficulty, a well-
crafted piece for SATB choir, descant, piano,
and solo instrument in C.

Words from the Cross—Joanna Forbes
L'Estrange. A quiet urgency flows through
this stunning offering for Holy Week. Jesus'
statements from the cross are framed by
plainspoken commentary that is insightful
and direct. Use the organ part as written -
the moments when it drops out or comes in
make a dramatic difference. The final refrain
unexpectedly blossoms into a triumphant
statement of the core meaning of our
Lord's sacrifice.
