41 (JMG1238) (as the scene opens, KATE, OLIVIA, ZACH, AND KJ are all busily working at the library table. SAMMIE stands nearby) SAMMIE: . KATE: SAMMIE: KATE: SAMMIE: KATE: SAMMIE: KATE: SAMMIE: ZACH: KATE: (ZACH and KJ exit stage left) OLIVIA: KATE: (OLIVIA exits stage left, as GRAM walks in stage right) GRAM: KATE: (they work in silence for a moment, cleaning up the mess, stacking up books, and putting the chairs back in place) GRAM: KATE: (KATE holds up the chart. GRAM keeps on working) GRAM: KATE: (GRAM smiles as KATE joins the re-entering SAMMIE downstage right – see "Staging" p. 3) Kate, would you and your friends like some snacks? Gram has some in her office, and she said if we were really careful, we could. . . No thanks, Sammie. Are you sure? (emphatically) Yes, Sammie. . . Is my name on the family tree? Where's my name? (she leans over, frantically pointing closely at Kate's chart, accidentally knocking over Kate's water bottle beside the chart. All kids jump as the "water" spills) Sammie! Now look what you've done! It took me thirty minutes to draw that chart, and now you've ruined it! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to spill it! Well you did! (she gets some tissues from a nearby container, and mops up water as she speaks) Honestly, sometimes I think family trees would be better off without little sisters! I'm sorry! I said I was sorry! (she runs out stage right, crying) (speaking uncomfortably) KJ and I have to go. It's time for soccer practice. (glumly) Ok, see you tomorrow. I guess I'd better be going, too. OK, see you later. Kate, Sammie just came into my office, crying. Something about your chart. I hugged her but she didn't want to talk about it. What happened? She's just clumsy, and annoying! She spilled water all over my papers. I think Sammie's really upset. Well, she should be! She ruined my chart, see? Yes, I see. (defensively) She's so clumsy! And she's always hanging around, asking questions and getting in the way. (looking to GRAM for her response) It took me. . . almost an hour – at least thirty minutes to draw it. (pauses) She wanted to get snacks for me and my friends. (thoughtfully) I think I'll go talk to her.
