43 (JMG1238) (KATE and SAMMIE rejoin the group. Throughout the scene, GRAM quietly stack books, put books on shelves, and then moves to sit in front of her laptop to work.) OLIVIA: KJ: ZACH: KJ: ZACH: KATE: KJ: OLIVIA: (all the kids stare at her, unbelievingly) ZACH: KATE: OLIVIA: KATE: OLIVIA: ZACH: OLIVIA: KJ: OLIVIA: KATE: OLIVIA: KJ: OLIVIA (When GRAM hears her name spoken by SAMMIE, she looks up from her laptop, stops working and joins in singing "I Know a Someone") We really need to work more efficiently. After we finish Kate's family tree, we have three more to do. I guess I'll never be able to trace my real family. What do you mean, your "real" family? Well, I'm adopted, and I don't know who my biological parents are. Oh, I forgot. That's okay, KJ. Your adopted parents are real! Yes, I guess loving me and taking care of me makes them real. And I do feel special because they chose me. Of course, the legal ramifications of adoption in America are rapidly changing. Just ignore her. She is so weird! Why do you do that? Do what? Use all those big words? I don't know. I started when I was a little kid. But why? Why don't you just use easy words like normal people? Well, when I was younger, and my parents would be arguing, I'd use a few big words, and it would take their minds off each other. Would they stop fighting? Sometimes. (sadly) But I couldn't make it work forever. They got a divorce last year, you know. (sympathetically) Yeah, that's rough. Sometimes I wonder. . . maybe if I had tried harder, they would still be together. Hey, it's not your fault! Maybe not, but I just feel so helpless. My family sort of fell apart. I was hoping this project would help me see things from a better perspective.
