47 (JMG1238) I suggest that you take some rehearsal time each week to discuss some of the family issues mentioned in Family Tree from a biblical perspective. If you do not feel comfortable with this, perhaps a Sunday School teacher or your pastor can fill this role. Children may have questions that need to be explored or answered privately. The following list provides brief scriptural background and suggested areas of discussion for some of the topics in each song. One idea might be to simply ask children to bring their bibles, and take turns reading the suggested scriptures. Ellen Woods Bryce Discuss the fact that God created families, and cares about each person. Genesis 1: 27-28 Psalm 127:3 Matthew 1: 1-17/ Luke 3: 23-37 Discuss the importance of loving, respecting, and listening to older adults. Deuteronomy 32:7 Proverbs 20:29 2 Timothy 1:5 Discuss the fact that time is a gift from God, and that we should use it wisely. Ecclesiastes 3:1 Talk about that fact that really listening to someone shows that we care. Psalm 116: 1-2 Matthew 7:12 James 1:19 Discuss with the children the importance of treating parents with respect. Deuteronomy 5:16 Ephesians 6: 1-3 Talk about the power our words have to hurt or to encourage. Talk about the importance of forgiveness, even when we've been deeply hurt. Proverbs 15:1 Ephesians 4: 29 Ephesians 4: 32 TEACHING SUGGESTIONS "Family Tree" "What Was it Like?" "Hurry! Scurry!" "Nobody's Listening to Me" "You Gotta Raise Your Parents Up Right" "By the Way, I Love You" God created the very first people, Adam and Eve, in His own image. Children are a gift from God. There are several genealogies (or "family trees") listed in the Bible, including two of Jesus. Each person in the family is important to God. We can learn from past generations. Both old and young are unique and important. Mentions Timothy's grandmother, Lois. There is a time for everything. God listens and hears us. We should treat others as we would like to be treated. We should be "quick to listen." Honor your father and your mother. Honor and obey your parents. How we speak can begin, or stop, an argument. Say only those things that will build up others. Be kind and compassionate, forgiving each other as God forgave us in Christ.
