Arranger/composer Erik Morales delivers! This
outstanding shuffle chart sounds like a big old
freight train coming down the tracks, and it just
builds and builds! There's a wonderful section
after the optional solos that features a powerful
sax soli without the rhythm section, and there are
great breaks for piano and drums throughout.
There are also some independent bari sax lines
and optional written solos for alto, tenor and guitar.
The lead trumpet range is to written A above the
staff and there's an optional ending with lead
trumpet notes up to C. This is a hot chart! Our

Sing, Sing, Sing—Louis Prima/trans. Mike
Lewis. Here it is...perhaps the most recognizable
swing tune of all time! This incredible transcription
is as close as you're going to come to the original
(which included clarinet and less than a full
compliment of brass). This chart is scored for a
standard 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and
rhythm, but aside from that, it is the original as
played by Benny Goodman. Every lick is there,
including all the Gene Krupa drum breaks! This
chart is a must for every big band's library!

Mossman. In 1977 Stevie Wonder was in his prime
and Sir Duke was on top of the charts. Michael
Philip Mossman takes this familiar hit and adds his
own unique touch. The opening features the brass
with sax section fills. The middle section goes into
a double-time swing and includes a solo for tenor
sax, a soli for the saxes, and a drum break. All
the familiar lines from the original are there too!
Suggested solos are included along with scale/

Take Five—Paul Desmond/arr. Rich DeRosa.
Perhaps the most famous time chart of all, Take
Five is in 5/4 - but the rhythmic pattern is clear and
consistent throughout. You'll find this arrangement
very accessible, with easy alto sax and drum solos
plus modest brass ranges. This chart features a
more laid-back style than the original and is sure
to be just as important today as was in the 1960s.

Work Song—Nat Adderley/arr. Erik Morales.
Wow! If Nat Adderley could hear this chart on his
iconic jazz standard, he would be pleased! The
first statement stays very close to the original,
which is a good thing. The solos are for written
or improvised alto and trumpet, and the solo
backgrounds are simply wonderful. This swinger
plays well at about 176 bmp, has excellent full-
ensemble passages, a bari sax and rhythm
section break before the last chorus, an exciting
shout chorus, and great development. This chart
has it all! Our highest recommendation!

for and played by Bud Shank, this showpiece
for alto sax features a wide dynamic range and
calls for a soft, smooth approach to background
figures. Although written solo lines are provided

The chart closes out with a solo cadenza over a
sustained ensemble chord.

Whiplash—Hank Levy/arr. Erik Morales.
Featured in the 2014 movie "Whiplash," depicting
the relationship between an ambitious student
musician and an abusive, yet respected instructor,
this chart is a super-exciting work in 7/4 composed
by Hank Levy and arranged by Erik Morales. Don't
be intimidated by the meter... it's challenging, but
after a few minutes it feels quite natural and the
students will totally groove on it. The melody is
stated by 2nd trumpet and 1st alto with solo space
for both on easy chord changes. Articulation is
critical and the rhythm section may want to spend
some quality time together. The lead trumpet
range is to written D above the staff. This is a
unique but very desirable chart to have in your
library. You won't regret playing Whiplash!

Here is the familiar America, the Beautiful reimagined as an energetic shuffle. An a cappella sax
soli chorale introduction gives way to a driving shuffle that continues for the remainder of the chart.
Harmon-muted trumpets provide extra color in spots. The ranges and rhythmic responsibilities
are moderate, and there's written or improvised solo space for tenor sax. This arrangement is
appropriate for civic events, patriotic celebrations or as an interesting change-up for festival/
adjudication program. This one is really nice!
